Wouldn’t an internal firewire version be just as good as internal scsi drive?

Yeah, most likely it would. Instead of using a SCSI to ATAPI bridge, use a FireWire to ATAPI one. DatOptic sells an adapter than can do this and it does work quite well. Now we just need a motherboard or FireWire card with internal FireWire ports.
