I have a big problem with my DVD RW writer BenQ1640 and MS.
I checked around and found, that this seems to be a quite common issue.
But nowhere I found a solution.
This device is detected correctly in the bios.
CD/DVD can be read with no problems.
In Windows XP with SP2 this device is shown, with no media in, also correct as DVD RW device.
In the moment I insert one media (any type) it renames himself to CD ROM.
In properties of this device the tab "recording" is missing.
In the registry under burning, this device is set to 3, this means, only CD ROM detected. For burning must be 2.
Allowed value are 1 and 2
1 = CD ROM
2 = RW
3 = not indicated anywhere
So Windows detection is wrong.
I edited to 2, but still no change.
With next reboot this is set to 3 again.
Deleted this drive at least 3 times.
Still no change
Burning software WinOnCD 6 and Nero6 allow burning (any kind of media) only till 740 MB = standard CD ROM value.
I deleted upper limits and lower limits in
Now Nero does not boarder any more about wrong detecting and is now burning full DVD.
WinOnCD still refusing.
This must be a problem with my setup, not with the hardware, as another machine does not show this problem.
I really have no more ideas how to correct this.
First information from BenQ support:
Device replaced by BenQ
New device shows the same
Solution from BenQ support:
Format and do a fresh install.
I'm still refusing to do so.
