More likely an excuse for developers to make bad PC ports of console games.
There have been many attempts at cross-platform PC-console mulitplayer. Most anything requiring reaction times and precision aiming better than chess result in console players getting slaughtered. Nothing beats a high-power gaming rig and a mouse.
