WMP 10 won't play movies on my computer

When my friend tries to play a DVD movie on his Compaq Presario S4100NX computer, he’s told he needs a codec.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to help him?

You need a dvd decoder. There are commercial programs like PowerDVD and WinDVD which have their own players, and there are a couple of free ones, called VLC and Media Player Classic. All of these are easily found with a Google search.

If you want to watch from within WMP 10, I believe it should be able to use the decoder that is installed with PowerDVD or WinDVD. There is also the PureVideo decoder from Nvidia if your system meets their specifications.

theres 3 possible solutions

  1. use a proper dvd playback software such as theatertek/powerdvd/windvd
  2. installing a codec pack , xp codec pack is quite good ,can be downloaded from http://www.xpcodecpack.com/
  3. use the free vlc media player , can be downloaded from http://www.videolan.org

IMO #1 is best

I use K-Lite codec full packs and sometimes #3.

i like xp codec pack better , it have only the nessasry codecs and nothin beyond

I haven’t tried both so maybe i’ll uninstall K-Lite and try it :slight_smile:
