I noticed that WML crashes when I selected the calendar and this fix from this thread worked for me:
…run the application in Windows 8 compatibility mode. This can be done by navigating to the Windows Live Mail 2012 folder and then right-click on wlmail.exe. Select Properties and on the Compatibility tab select ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for > Windows 8’. Apply the changes and start the WML application as usual…

P.S. I foolishly installed the Microsoft email link to the KB patch which brought on the crash problems. I restored back to an earlier date and ran ‘repair’ to no avail.

Just crashed again when I opened the calendar…

Here’s what I did next and so far-so good:

REMOVE WINDOWS ESSENTIALS
-Go to Control Panel select Programs and Features
-Right-click Windows Essentials 2012 and then click om Uninstall/Change
-Select Remove one or more Windows Essentials 2012 programs
-Check all programs
-Select Uninstall button (This removes all Windows Essentials programs)
INSTALL WINDOWS ESSENTIALS - ONLY SELECT PROGRAMS
-Download current Windows Essentials
-Install Windows Essentials
-Go to Control Panel & select Programs and Features
-Right-click Windows Essentials 2012 and then click om Uninstall/Change
-Select Remove one or more Windows Essentials programs
-Uncheck (to uninstall) all programs except Photo Gallery & Movie Maker & Mail
-Select Uninstall button (This removes all Windows Essentials programs except to Gallery & Movie Maker & Mail)
