hi i converted a movie using convertxtodvd and its in widescreen format. i had the settings on automatic for the tv screen size to create and the movie came out fine. i watched it on my computer with power dvd and the movie screens fits fine and dandy. But when i burnt it off to watch on my tv the sides were cut off a little. is this a dvd player problem or what?

If you have 4:3 TV then set DVD player to show 4:3 Letterbox.
Using it on 4:3 Pan&Scan will cause this.

#3

i dont understand. whats pan&scan? i do have a 4:3 tv and i tryed fooling around with the dvd player settings but its still cut off. like when i zoom out i cant see anymore of the picture, just black on the sides. is there anything i can do?

#4

That is setting on how DVD player sends picture to TV.
Using it on P&S means that you see only middle part of widescreen movie. You should be able to scroll movie sideways while in P&S mode using DVD players remote, but that function is really quite useless.
So use 4:3 Letterbox.

How to change it depends on your DVD player, read DVD player manual.

Why can’t ConvertXtoDVD just produce a native wide screen video stream instead of having to letterbox and lose out on resolution?

I have this exact same problem where widescreen conversions turn into fullscreen pan and scan on any standalone DVD player.

I think the problem is with ConvertXtoDVD not with the players.

Nero doesn’t do this.

CxD DID produce widesceen on your conversion:

1/19/2007 8:31:25 PM info Widescreen (16:9) set automatically

Few simple things - DVD can hold ONLY 16:9 or 4:3 video.
TV sets are ONLY 4:3 or 16:9.

Most movies are much wider than 16:9, and only way to encode them to DVD is to fit with in full and add black bars on top and bottom as needed to get full DVD resolution.

DVD players are sending out data as they are instructed. If they are set to send 4:3 P&S then that is all they can send.

DVD player should always be set to 16:9 if user has 16:9 TV, or to 4:3 Letterbox.
Using 4:3 Pan&Scan will fit to full height, but sides are cut off.
