Why this drive fail to burn data DVD with ''hidden files''?

I just installed this new BDR-205 from Pioneer which I wish to use for blu-ray. However, I was surprised by two burn failures (data DVD with less than 3 GB), after not even 1%. The thing is some of the files (priorly made visible) are usuially hidden and the entire folder is normally hidden.

I then tried the same folder and its files on my older burner (CD/DVD) still in the same PC, and it burned succesfully. Weird...

The pioneer was able to burn another folder though (non-hidden).

Is this a bug with the Pioneer burner ?

Here's what I get (both under Vista and Win 7) as log with NERO 7 (Vista) and 9 (Win 7) :

It's funny though that NERO 9 sees Win 7 as Vista, and NERO 7 sees Vista as XP... (Also this PC is not AMD, it's an Intel Core 2 Duo...) :

You’re getting Key Illegal Request errors, which normally means the drive isn’t recognizing your blank disks very well. Though I don’t believe this is the problem in your case, since you are using Verbatim -R disks, which should be fine in this burner.

Do me a favor and try a burn with ImgBurn instead of Nero. It is a free burning program that has replaced Nero for my burning needs. Burn at 8 or 12x instead of 16x. If the burn fails, post the log from ImgBurn here. You can find it by clicking on Help within ImgBurn, then ImgBurn Logs.

ImgBurn and Nero can exist peacefully on the same system, and ImgBurn is a very small download.

The reason for trying this is to help isolate what is going on. Lets see if it is something within Nero.

Will imgBurn work under Windows 7 ? (It does not states it on this page). Also, my main reason for spending over $200 for burning is ability to burn BD discs - otherwise, I would stick with my $30 CD/DVD burner

However, my only trial with BD tonight (got the drive today…) was with a disc that was used (nothing burned on it) in a LG drive I just returned this week.

Please note I have been able to burn 2 DVDs out of 6 trials with the Pioneer tonight (4 failures !). So: does not seem to be connections or anything like that.

That being said: yes I will give imgBurn a try and post results.

ImgBurn works fine in Win7…I use it there myself.

And it is great for burning Blu ray video to BD-R and BD-RE disks.

Wow ! Indeed, I went to try it under Win 7 right away, and succeeded in burning a DVD (not same filke/folder selection that failed though, but I like a light program like this !

I am going to give it a try on a BD-R tomorrow.

Thanks very very much for this precious hint. Guess I will not repack the drive yet

And now it is finishing one of the folders that failed twice, both under Win 7 and Vista (I have a tri-boot PC…) And it is… succeeding with imgBurn. I will definitely give my last BD disc a try with imgBurn tomorrow.

And it now succeeded with a folder that gave me problem both under Win 7 and Vista with two different versions of NERO (7 and 9).

I will definitely use my last BD disc tomorrow to give this program (and my drive !) a chance to prove it with blu-ray (data).

lanstrad Imgburn works with Win 7 and the Pioneer BDR 205. I have burnt 2 successful Blurays now with out any problems.

I have ripped 8 so far to my hard drive with no problems.

My success so far with the imgBurn and Pioneer BDR-205 combo :

burned 2 data DVDs with no problem
burned a 20GB data BD with no problem at all

Guess I’m done with NERO…
(wasted 3 BD discs, 4 data DVDs out of 6, returned a LG BH08 blaming it for my failures and was ready 15 hours ago to repack the Pioneer and wait for the next generation of drivers…)

Thanks imgBurn ! No bells and whistles and a program that does what you expect it to do rather than hijacking 75% of your files extensions and trying to take control of everything…
