Why do NEC burners suck at ripping audio CD's?

I have a NEC ND3550 burner with the latest firmware and when I try to rip CD’s (non-scratched) with EAC half of the time my drive will slow down and it won’t finish ripping (I just get a whole bunch of errors after that). So my question is… Why do NEC burners suck at ripping? Or at least the NEC ND3550… Many other people that have the same drive as me have told me that they encounter the same problem. Don’t get me wrong though, this drive kicks ass at writing and reading CD’s/DVD’s but it blows at ripping. Hope you can let me know why. Thanks.
