Why do i get so bad scans?

Hello gyus,
i just made my 1st scan with PX712A.
I used PlexTool 2.17 and used a TY02 Fuji branded.
I don’t know if should adjust some settings before scanning, so now i scanned this dvd by default [ only changed read speed at 2X CLV]

Please tell me if i should change some other settings and also how read results please. Thanks

Below 280 but not by much. Can you record another at 8x for comparison? Just because it can write up to 12x doesn’t mean you should. If the 8x media won’t write at 12x without high errors, try at the rated speed. Most problems are still media related. Bet you’ll get better 12x scans if you try another package of TY media.

#3

How long does it take to burn T02 @12x? From the total time to burn a full disk we can determine if there’s something wrong. Normally it takes 6:13-6:45 mins.
What’s your settings in Plextools - Drive Settings - Advanced? PowerRec and Enable DMA should be checked as well as others you need (SpeedRead, buffer underun).

For Q-Check PI/PO scan, you can set to “Good Accuracy” in Preferences to save time.

#4

Shin_79, it could be that you’re one of the unlucky recipiants of a subpar PX-712A. I’m awaiting delivery of my fourth PX-712A as I type (UPS is really dragging its feet).

#5

Ok guys, finally you’re here

For Bob: yes i burned five TY02 at 12X and all from same pack. All scans are incredibly similar with 150-160 total PIE (and really few difference between all 5 discs).
I have also 25 TY from another package and burned at 8x. Anyway i didn’t scanned them 'cause i’m scared of bad results  I’ll try later anywa

For Zevia: that’s point! I downloaded PlexTool 2.18 and scanned with default settings. None was changed by me. Maybe you could lead me step by step to configure as you did…if it doesn’t mind.
Anyway i burn a full dvd+r in 6.10 - 6.20 min. at 12X

P.S. PowerRec and Enable DMA were checked as well as buffer underun. SpeedRead wasn’t so i checked right now. Should this can influence results?

Thanks a lot

Does it exist subpar PX-712A drivers

#7

Just find the thread on firmware 1.05 for the PX-712A and you will see for yourself.

#8

If you burn for 6.10 - 6.20 mins, then you are indeed burning @12x. Are you sure you have a Fuji TY, not CMC or Ricoh? Can you check with Plextools - CD/DVD info and what is the Manufacturer ID says?

SpeedRead makes reading/ripping faster, does not affect burning.

Before we jump to any conclusion, can you try burning other media as bob11879 suggested and show us the scan? It might be your TY batch or quality variation within a batch. I had an experience with “bad” TY (bought 3-4 months ago) but not as bad as yours. Spikes around 60-120 max PIE at then end of the disk. With my new T02 (TDK made in Japan) I got from bestbuy yesterday, I got excellent result.

Burned with Plextor 712A
fuji T02, @12x old scan, only “very good” in my book, spikes PIE max 66.
tdk T02, @12x excellent scan (new batch?) clean below 20 PIE max.

Burned with BenQ 1620A
fuji T02, @16x old scan, again only “good”, PIE max above 100.
fuji T02, @12x old scan, excellent, PIE max below 10.
tdk T02, @16x new scan, excellent, PIE max below 10.

Well, I got PX-712A #4 in today, and of the first 4 discs I’ve burned, 3 have been coasters. Two Fujifilm T02s at 12x (different spindles), and one Maxell 8x DVD-R. The Sony 8x DVD-R seems to have done fine.

#12

Hey Two Degrees, try working your way up rather than down. Like 4x@4x, 8x@8x, then 4x@8x, 8x@12x…

You’ve seen my scans, and what I’d like to add is that, yes, while my 712 can burn at 12x, the 8x@8x burns are always better. And my very best burn (9000 PIE total, under 10 all the way) was a ricohjpn01 4x@4x. In fact, the ricohjpn01’s are the only ones I fully trust to overspeed reliably.

And I will settle for that.

#13

I won’t settle, not when I see people burning T02s at 12x and TYG02s at 8x and getting under 20 PIE the entire disc, when I’m getting 8x burns like this:

Ehi Two_Degrees, sorry but can’t find this thread. Could you gimme a link please?

P.S. did you turn back your subpar driver or are you waiting for you 4th PLEXTOR, already having other three ?

#18

Shin_79, hm… burning a quality 8x rated media T02 @8x and get that kind of result is not good. One last test, could you please do a Plextools Write Transfer Test scan and post here, on TY T02 burn at 12x. In the Preference, uncheck Simulation so the drive will burn data to disk. Sorry it’s going to waste a media. I wanted to see how the chart looks like. If the chart is clean and only have 3 spikes (PowerRec kicks in) looks like this one http://club.cdfreaks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10561&stc=1 then your system setup is fine and your drive might the problem.

This is Plextor 1.05 firmware thread Two_Degrees mentioned http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=106046

thanks Zevia for your help. Really really appreciated.
Anyway i’ll do the test you asked for and post results.
For now i have to say that all spindles i have [ both TY02 8X RATED FUJI branded and RICOHJPN02 8X PLATINUM branded* are “made in Japan” signed on the back and have been bouth in the same store from Germany.

This morning i bought in a local store this media:
RICOHJPN01 4X and burned at 4X in 14.20 min
TDK branded
MADE IN TAIWAN.

Zevia, here’s scan you wanted to look.
Waht do you think about this scan and about Taiwanese DVD+R last scan?
Should be “just” a madia problem, according to you ?
