Why can't I burn CD's so I can play them?

Hi everybody,

I’ve just spend nearly a week and a whole package of CD-R80 to try and burn some music.
No matter what I do, the result is always the same : computer sees and plays and nothing else plays or even sees the CD. My player isn’t that finicky about burned CD’s and I have loads of them to prove it. But : this is also the first one I’ve tried to burn under windows7 instead of XP.

If I try it directly from media player it burns it as data and even creates subfolders. (my first scream)
If I try it via E-drive I get the options data or audio. I was so desperate I even tried data even though I knew it wouldn’t work.

SO now I fear that maybe the disk isn’t closed after all, since only the computer will see and play it. But how do I close it after burning then?

Can someone tell me what to do?

Thanks already in advance for thinking for me.

grz. camamaja

ps. I shall introduce myself at a later date. I simply don’t have the time right now as I have to dash.

Hello camamaja and welcome to the forums.

What format are the music files in now, before you try to burn them to a disk? If they are mp3 or some other format that doesn’t conform to Audio cd specs, then you’ll need to try a different strategy.

What I do to make an audio cd from various types of audio files is to make a cue file out of them first, then burn the cue file to the disc. The program I use is called ImgBurn, and it is generally regarded as one of the very best burning programs available. And its free to download and use. You can find it at this page: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download Just click on one of the mirror links.

Follow this guide to make a cue file: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=5555

And this guide shows how to burn the cue file with ImgBurn: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

I agree with Kerry on ImgBurn for the burning program.
Set up correctly it will convert several different audio formats to
the one that plays on Audio CDs.

@ Kerry , The second & third link in your post are the same one.

Fixed. Thanks cholla. (you know its a hard day when you can’t get copy and paste to work  )

#5

Welcome Kerry ,
I actually haven’t burned anything with my W7 laptop.
I guess I should connect my external DVD drive to it & see how it burns.
I have never burned anything on it’s internal drive & don’t plan to.
I don’t even use it to read a disc very often.

#6

I’ve honestly never tried to burn a Disc as “audio” with any native windows disc program.

So I don’t know how I’d go about telling someone else how to do it.

I’m not sure it’s possible to do so without dedicated “Burner” software.

all of my various computers from P-III onward, have had some version
of “Roxio”.

Generally when I burn a disc as “audio CD” (which I have not done since
sometime late in 2008) I’ve used Exact Audio Copy, because it is the only
burner program I know (or more precisely “Knew of” at the time) of that
will write CD-TEXT information.

I believe Nero will do so also, but most playback devices don’t
read CD-TEXT data, and most recently produced devices play
mp3-CD’s anyway…

thank you kerry.

I must say I feel stupid for not thinking of that, though previously I never had to change MP3 before burning. All the “old” burned cd’s are with MP3.
But I will certainly give it a go.

#8

tried ImgBurn and it did its job properly, but same old problem : only computer will play music. everywhere else : no disc.
I am going crazy here. Even normal solutions don’t work. :a

and further more : even tried to “duplicate” one of the older burned cd’s. THe same songs I used them to be burned on disc (with and without ImgBurn) and same irritanting result. No disc. what am I to do???

#9

If it is not the format of the information on the discs, then you are down to poor burning by the drive or poor quality blank cds. Since the computer can read back the data from the discs, and you don’t seem to have any errors in burning, I’d say that the problem lies in the discs themselves.

The blank cds that we normally recommend are made by Taiyo Yuden and are available online. If you are in the US, you can find them at Amazon, Rima.com and Supermediastore.com.

Or you can examine the cds that work in your various players using Imgburn. Just pop one in and see what the mid code is. You can do this in several ways, but one way is to use Discovery mode in ImgBurn. It will show the information about the disc on the right side of the main window. Then examine one of the cds that doesn’t work and see if they differ.

#10

Please post the ImgBurn log from Help/ImgBurn Logs…
This may help point to a problem.
Also when you open the burned Audio CD does it have .CDA files of 44 bytes ?

#11

to answer both of you :

it can’t be the discs being low in quality. They’re the same ones I’ve always used.
and yes : CDA files of 44. I will attack that forum as well, thank you.

i am sorry I just bombarded you with three different logs but I can’t make head or tails from it so I thought better safe than sorry and give them all.

thanks again in advance for your time

#16

I don’t know which one is which, meaning I don’t know which of the log files you’ve posted shows a disc that works, but the first log shows that the disc was made in India by Moser Baer. Its disc id code is 97m17s06f.

The last two are discs made by Ritek, and their id code is 97m15s17f.

So you are not using the same types of discs, even though they may have been sold under the same brand name.

The log I requested should have some different information.
Did you just select all the upper right area & copy that ?
That is what the information you posted looks like.
