I’ve tried everything, me and a few others here see 12x max!!
Either the firmware is stopping it or they changed the strategy to produce better burns?
I’ve tried every q-suite setting and diffrent media, my 1640 burns just about everything @16x!
Let’s see some real results…no bullshitter’s please!

When you say 16x, of course the drive can’t do that all the way through, no drive can. You should be looking at overall burn times and some people apparently have it down to 5:40 or less which is impressive. From that thread the 1640 cannot go faster than 5:14 or so?

I’d settle for 6:30 or less on a consistant basis but I do see the drive hit 16x for a few seconds at a time within Nero or Imgburn.

It might help that I have X2 @ 2700 with 2gb of ram for buffering?

Absolutely no problem burning at 16x with my BenQ DW1650. Posted quite a few scans of 16x burns in the “Post your BenQ DW1650 SL scans here” thread, as have others.

My fastest burn so far was 5:19 min on a full disc, done with TDK 16x DVD-R (TTH02) media, as can be seen here.

What Media are you using??? You should be getting 16 X burns with out any problems, It might be your PC setup that is stopping you from getting 16X burns and not your Burner.

#5

I can only burn at 12x with my current desktop, although I took my 1650 to a friends computer which was a computer not more than a year old, much better than the shtbox im running my 1650 with, and i got 16x burns.

#6

Well my computer has no problem with 1640 16x burns, so thats not the problem i feel that this drive is new and the current firmwares available dont allow faster speed’s so far.
When i bought my 1640 they were up already in firmwares, mine has a may 2005 build date.
I’ll try different media tonight.

Also this drive stinks!!, meaning the smell of puke!!
I almost got sick this morning swapping drives as my head was near the drive laying on the table.

#7

sounds dodgy to me then. I’d rma it. Have you tried it on another computer anyway?? Computers works in mysterious ways…

#8

I was gunna bring it in here to my work poot, forgot it running out the door, i have a rma set last night.
We need to setup a list of what burns @16x, kinda like the old days in the NEC forum

#9

i managed to burn a plextor T003 with my 1650 at my friends computer.

#10

My 1650 burns the MBI and Sony 16x media at the rated speeds and the fastest time i have clocked so far is 5.:59 mins (all discs burnt at default settings)

Which media are u using??

#11

This is wat i got…

#12

I’m using the cheapest media you can buy … AML…,1640 burns these @16x, 1650 @12x.
All my stuff is in boxes in the cellar, got a new bedroom set and there go’s my “pooter pad”, believe me it took 3 weeks to get used to the rearrangment!
3 big boxes of 8 yrs of junk, i’ll dig up some MCC media tonight and retry.
Wife got her “dream room” and i got boned!!
I bought a new Laptop in retaliation with a NEC 6750 burner, so most of my burning is done there in the living room.

#13

Well that is the problem, Budman62… low quality media. SolidBurn (if you use it) probably limits the burn speed to 12x. Did you get good result with your 1640 @16x?

#14

Which Sony 16X media? Is it available locally?

#15

^^ they were Sony 16x DVD+R’s…dont remember the MID’s…were available in Nasik a couple of months back for 30 bucks…but cant find them anywhere now

#16

Here’s a scan of my 1640 with the 10 cent AML 002 media
I’ll install the 1650 and scan the same media

#17

Here’s the same crap media as the 1640, fall’s flat at 12x, this is a firmware strategy fault, the time isn’t bad at 6:09
I originally has BCFC installed would only burn @4x, so i reloaded BCDC.

#18

1640@16X; maximum PIF 21, b.time:6:09 and… 1650@12X; maximum PIF:9; and 30 seconds slowly than the 1640.
The burning speed is one thing and, more importantly is the burning quality! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey Budman!

Looking at both BCDC and BCFC in MCSE, AML 002 is 8X max. Maybe as already mentioned, SolidBurn in conjunction with overspeed is limiting the 1650 to 12X.

Looking at the 16X burn in your 1640 I wouldn’t burn this media any higher than 8X to be safe.
