Which laptop?

I have a home office with several desk top computers that I personally built. My desk top knowledge does not carry over to lap tops. I am very confused on which laptop to purchase. I want to go wireless with my home network. Want to work on patio or in den as a break from the office. There are a lot of laptop display descriptions like “Ultra Sharp”,“Bright View” what is the best? Hp looks like a good deal so does Toshiba price wise. Believe me any help will be appreiciated. What brands should I avoid? Any suggestions on any aspect of the lap tops will help.

What are you going to use it for?

Surfing net, General office work ae Word, Excel, QuickBooks. I perfer speed. 14" or 15" either is fine. I don’t want a desktop replacment laptop. It appears in order to get speed you have to go for the big expensive laptops meant to replace desktops. My main 2 desktops are a Intel D 950 and a AMD athlon 64 x2 4400, both systems have 2 gig ram and sata 2 drives with pci express video cards. Do I go Turion or core duo? Shared memory or dedicated video memory? 5400 speed or 7200 speed hard drive? Nothing I will do will tax the laptop. Price range $800.00 to $1400.00. Do not want dvd burners or 17" screen or docking stations or all these type add ons. I have all this with my desk tops (no docking station). The lap tops of friends seem slow. I want to avoid slow.

get something with a core duo, 7200 rpm drive, at least 1GB ram (you can upgrade if you find a good deal on one with less), and as long as you don’t play any games on it shared vid will be fine

terms such as “Ultra Sharp” and “Bright View” are just marketing jargon to confuse and lure consumers, to sort out which screen is best for you, you will need to compare resolutions, brightness, and contrast ratio in the specs for each model, or just go to an electronics store and use the good ol’ calibrated eyeball

as for which brands/models are best  someone else will have to help you with that 'cause I have no idea
