My DVD Burner, NEC 2500A, is no longer recognized by my OS (Win 98SE – I know, update the OS, but it’s all I have right now). “My Computer†sees it as a CD Burner.
The burner program I am using is Nero 6.
The burner worked fine until I upped the firmware and reinstalled some Windows system files. (I didn’t have enough storage capacity to make a backup before I did this.)
I upped the firmware to the latest manf.’s offering: 1.0b.
Checking with Nero Info Tool, it showed the flash was successful.
I tried it. It worked. InfoTool even says I now have DVD-R DL. That is interesting.
Then the trouble started:
I saw on the NERO site a new, Nero 6 Ultra update.
I downloaded it. Cleaned the old Nero off the system.
Just before I reinstalled, I read that for Windows 98 (it didn’t mention Windows 98SE), NERO needs the system to have the following to work properly:
1) Common Control Library Patch
2) DCOM98.exe, latest version
3) MDAC, latest version my OS will support
Loaded in that order.
Not remembering the original order of installation, I reinstalled each.
(Prior to that I checked and found I didn’t have #1, did have #2, and several versions of #3, MDAC (at least in the Registry). I didn’t change any settings.
Then installed in order, what NERO said I needed.
I rebooted and installed the new NERO 6. I did not install INCD.
Now, “My Computer,†show the DVD as having CD Properties. –I read somewhere that the system has to have a UDF file on it (something like packet writing—but not pw) for the system to recognize DVDs. Don’t remember the file or how to tell if my system now has it.-
With “My Computer†showing only the 648 meg capacity of a CD, I still tried to burn 2 gigs onto the DVD, in data disc, multi-session mode. It worked. However, “My Computer,†although showing the 2 gigs there, it gives the available space as zero.
“My Computer†as well as DVD burners on other computers, can read the 2 gigs, but all say, the remaining space is zero.
I tried to burn more onto that disc. That failed, with, no space available.
For good measure, I reflashed the firmware; but nothing changed.
Nero InfoTool shows me having a full-capacity, DVD burner; Windows CP|System|Device Manager, shows under, CDs, the DVD burner (at least its name) and says it is working properly.
Did I kill my burner with the firmware flash?
Did I kill the OS by installing/reinstalling those three files?
Is the UDF file system missing?
Any ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it?
If it’s the OS, can it be fixed without having to wipe it out and reinstall?
(Oh, I ran SFC on the OS, but it had no effect. I also reinstalled NERO--nothig changed.)
