As this question shows I am new to this. Having started downloading movies I am like a kid in a sweet shop and gathering all this free stuff off the net as well as all the stuff on my computer. So far I have installed etomi and win mix to look for films and movies. I have windows media player 10 which doesn’t work properly all the time as it gives a message saying I need a certain file to continue which I down loaded and still get the same messege. I have real player which I like (it even told me which tag I needed to get audio on a movie) Powerdvd pro, Divx player and converter., winavi convertor nero vso divxtodvd and video inspector. I have also downloaded a few codec s and packages to get movies playing. Please somebody tell me if I need allthis stuff which is best and more importantly which to dump as I think my computor is slower now and I am getting adware (as confirmed by my norton)

try Quicktime Alternative..It’s good and it’s free.Get rid of that Real player.

good way to get yourself banned, no piracy on these forums.

He didn’t say anything that explicitly says he illegaly downloading copyright protected material. There are movies that can be legally downloaded for free, although they are in the minority of what’s available. Too many people jump to conclusions on this forum whenever someone mentions that they downloaded something. It may well be that you’re correct but it’s bad manners to make assumptions and accusations without knowing the full details.

Thanks Mr horse, how am I supposed to know whats illegal when I’m downloading off etomi and they tell me it’s 100% legal. Perhaps Mr crusty could be constructive and give advice about troubles to a newcomer instead of accusing me of piracy. I do still need help though. And am I supposed to be getting so much spyware off this site or more importantly how do I stop it.

I agree, not every movie that is downloaded is illegal. We are tolerant and like to give people the benefit of the doubt. However, this can only be done up to a point of course.

A general rule, movies that are currently shown in theaters or have been recently released on DVD/VHS are copyright protected and downloading them without paying license fees for it, is considered illegal. To avoid legal problems for this site, we can (of course) not allow that here.

I will assume here that it was a legal download. In case my assumption is incorrect, I will be forced to close this thread and issue a formal warning. The rules are clear and agreed to when signing up to this forum.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

alright, sorry for jumping the gun, just trying to make sure this place stays clear of all that.

right back to the issue, i always use media player for everything, well except dvds, for that i use power dvd. If your having trouble playing certain files in media player then you could download a good codec pack, one of the best would be k-lite (found here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm ), but make sure that you uninstall all other codecs on your machine first as they can cause conflicts etc, i don’t know if you have that one as you said you tried getting some codec packs.

i always find that realplayer is quite a system hog, takes up a lot of memory (media player playing nothing is around 5.7mb, realplayer is around 11.5mb, plus it opens other things too). But i keep it in case i need to see a streaming video or something.

any help?

Thanks both for the info, it’s good to know the legalities and I will keep on the right side of the law.
I’ll get rid of my real player now and go back to Windows media player and try to sort out my problem with it. I was just downloading codecs willy nilly, but I’ll take your advice and dump my others and try the codec pack recommended. Thanks again.

I use VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358).

OK real player’s gone. I hpe i can useMedia player orVLC media player I’m gonna try both and I’ll get back to you with what I think is best. By the way when I use my power dvd pro I get the message The power dvd direct show direct filters have not been installed correctly. Any ideas whats happened now?

where did you get power dvd pro? Sounds like you when you downloaded it something happened to cause something to become corrupt and not install it correctly

get rid of spyware adware with http://www.noadware.net/compare/

also http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

I’ve found both of these work in harmony, I usually only run Adaware, and only run Asquared occaisionally or when Adaware can’t remove something.

A lot of folk like SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I’m not a fan, because it creates dummy programs to fool the senders of these malware programs. It also fools the other anti malware programs who destroy the dummies??
However that’s purely my choice, others think highly of it.

Well that’s three, free programs that’ll clean up your PC.

Best of luck M.
