Had a question about DVDFab. When re-encoding a Blu Ray rip, am I loosing picture quality by using 1920x800 resolution versus 1920x1080? I guess I don’t understand what it’s doing when it puts it at 1920x800 instead of 1080.

It’s all to do with aspect ratio. If a movie’s resolution is 1920x800 then the movie is still 1080p because the horizontal native resolution needs a minimum 1080p vertical monitor to correctly display the image without scaling.
If you use a 1920x1200 monitor even 1080p movies will have black bars when viewed native.

Most x264 encodes crop the black bars out because they don’t need coding.

Thanks. I just was interested in finding out if I was losing quality by not keeping it at 1920x1080. But it seems like if I go in and manually set it for that, it’s just encoding the black bars along with the video and wasting space.
