When is fw1.5 for 708A coming?

Someone any news?

I am also waiting for 1.05 to come out so maybe it will burn properly with any skips, freezes, esp toward the end of a dvd…nothing pisses me off more then getting thru a movie then the last 20 mins it starts frezzing and pixalation damage.
these are ricoh pr01’s i’m using…i since bought a NEC 2500a, burns them at 6x but…THEY WORK!!
I didnt pay top dollar for this drive to burn at 4x!!!
I’ll sell it if any interested takers…paid $229…make me a deal you cant refuse and its yours

What for a new firmware? It works perfectly with all quality media i throw at it.

@Budman62
If your drive is defective why dont’t you return it? No firmware release will fix a broken drive!

Not defective…same as yours…just wont playback properly in most standalones…use ricoh disc’s pr01’s at 8x and you’ll see why…my NEC has no problems with any playback issues.
I’m not going out and spending top dollar for a 5 cent dvd!!
Dvd’s are a money making scam…just like cd-r’s once were
Dual layer when it comes out will bring the cost down too 100 for $20!!

Yup i had the same problem with my plextor 708 and i got nec 2500a from office max on sale on staturday for 19 after rebate. I have noticed the same thing. On plextor Richojpn but at 8X but skip on my standalone dvd player and will not play at all on my xbox but when i burned the same media on nec at 6X they work perfectly in both. Too bad plextor drive can not burn 6X maybe the media is the problem.

Now the one thing i did notice is that my plextor drive will burn Philips 48X CDR’s i got for free after rebate from best buys a couple weeks ago at 40X and both the nec 2500a and liteon 52327S will only burn this media at 24X. But i did not get my dvdr to burn to cdrs.

Good to hear others with my problems, actually all forums i visit read the same problems, seems plextor doesnt have the sense to lower the speed as the nec does, thats why i’m hoping for a newer firmware…buy why do i really need 3 dvd burners?

Liteon 40x cd-rw
Yamaha 24x cd-rw

I’ve burned RICOH @ 8X SPEED & they play perfectly fine on my standalone dvd players. I’ve read some older dvd players are not equipped to play ones burned @ 8x. If they don’t play correctly just cut the burn speed down to 4x. It could be the way you’re authoring and burning that it won’t play correctly. So many variables. That’s just my opinion.

About a month ago I burned a movie with a few TDK 4X which were Ricohjpnr01 & i burned at 8x & when i put it in my standalone DVD player at first it came back with a error of incompatiable disc & I said a few choise words & then I pressed play a few times & wala it worked. I even ejected the disc & put it back in & this time no error weird ehhhhhhh, maybe some smart techknowledgy in the standalone, it is just a cheapy GE brand model made by RCA. I think it all come down to good quality media a cheap standalone player. But as I read your message your using the same media, yet I have as yet burned a coaster, maybe just maybe I’m doing something right, or is it just lucky??? What was the brand of the media on the cover of the jewel case. Are all ricohjpnr01 the same quality, I have read this is not always so, so it gets back to the standalone player. Me & dvd addict can’t be the only ones that don’t have problems. It seems like they’re a few users out there that are having nothing but problems with their Plextor while others are not having any problems. Just for fun go out buy a new standalone DVD player I like the one I have it was bought at Walmart it is a GE brand model “DGE105N” if you have money & time to do this test, & maybe even keep it as it works for me even at 8X & it burns in LESS than 8 minutes, try & beat that with the Nec, hey it’s just a thought. I have read reviews about NEC 2500 & some of the notes on that model was not favourable, there are good & bad points to all brands. Personally I think that there should have been ALOT MORE TESTING pryer to these DVD burner drives being sold, as ALL BRANDS are have some sort of problem, but…hey, that’s my view. Just look at the LiteOn forum, there bashing the 811s like there is no tomorrow. Just for fun i went in the NEC forum & they’re having writing problems too. Yet you Budman are happy with yours, again these users would like to sell to sale you their NEC probably as well, there are NO PERFECT DRIVES. I think it is that you need a good marriage (that’s what i call it) between the burner & the player, of course along with good quality media yepper it’s a threesome. It also seems to my VERY limited experience that cheaper & more up to date player the better.

I use both TDK, memorex and Imation brand richojpn media. Like i said in another post .some standalone dvd players have problems with plextor burning 8X to 4X media. I have also tried verbatim and have seen the same problem. No XBOX will play 8x burns on 4X media from plextor drive cause you get a dirty disk error. I have seen lots of people complaining about this on xbox forums.

Now it could be a limation of the 4X media who knows. ALL other burners only burn either 4X or 6X to richojpn the exception is TAIYO YUDEN most of the burners will burn that media at 8X. But we all know TAIYO YUDEN is considered the best media and that is why you pay such a premium for it.

I even went out and order a 5 pack of plextor media which is Richojpn and it would not play on my xbox at all either if burned at 8X.

Now i gave away the 8X copies i made to a friend who has a cheapo apex dvd player because they works fine in his player. Also all the 8X burned i made like 10 of them never got 1 coster they would play fine in my computer but they would skip in the samsung 931, Sony 770ns and i would get dirty disk errors on my xbox.

But same files burned on nec at 6X using same media plays fine in all my dvd players and even my xbox.

So i think it has something to do with 8X burning and amount of errors you get on the disk and how well the dvd player can deal with all the errors. And maybe the reason the nec seems to be more capatible is cause it only burning at 6X to same media and getting a much lower error count.

Dolmar you have a valid point so I was wondering is it possible for the Plextor to burn at 6x instead of 8x just to see if that solves the problem. Has anyone tried??? It would be nice so we can test his theory out, this sounds logical.

Nope, that’s not possible. You either burn at 4x or at 8x (although when burning at 8x the burn process is started at 6x).

you can force the writer to write @ 6X using DVD Decrypter.
i did this once but the speed dropped to 4X later. can anyone try DVD Decrypter and set the speed to 6X on a good media?

I use either dvddecryptor or nero on all my burns, its possible now that my plex is on secondary slave that it might actually burn better, sure i love plex’s speed, but whats a few minutes more for a working copy
I own like 8 standalones and a xbox/ps2 also

Perhaps you need to change your plextor to secondary master. It’s recommended the drive be connected to master instead of slave. Just my opinion.

It was as secondary master…seems to work better as slave…now the “king” nec is master…ha

I have my plextor connected to primary master by itself and nec to secondary master by itself cause i got 2 hd in raid running on off the southbridge sata controller.

And i have nothing but problems with all the burns the plextor drives makes at 8X. But all the 4X burns work fine tho.

I think it has something to do with the media and how standalone dvd player handle the errors. I have read on the xbox forums people with hacked pioneer 107 firmware are having the same problem when they burn G04 at 8X. As we all know richojpn media made in twain is made by ritek. In usa most of the +r media out there is the twain richojpn. So it might have something to do with the die that ritek is using.

And the Pioneer 107 hacked firmware is also lacking in a 6X burn speed which i think might be the max speed this media can handle while maintaining full compatiblity with most dvd players. Same idea as media burned at 52X some cd players seem to have a problem playing it back while other do not. I think all this has to do with error count and how well cd/dvd players handle error corection. Remember most standalone cd/dvd players are built with processors that can barely play the media so if they burns are riddled with errors they processor is overoad and you get the skipping effect. The reason they play fine in your pc is even the slowest pc running Winxp is 100X more powerfull than the best cd/dvd player out.

This is just my thoughts i have no way to prove this. This are just what i have noticed.

Plextor Japan seems to have released the 1.05 firmware version now: http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=23334
