What burner have you owned that has just been your favorite? The venerable BenQ DW1640? The strong LG GSA-4163B? The plucky Pioneer DVR-111D? Maybe the well-tested & re-tested LiteOn SHM-165H6S? A Samsung SH-S203B to overspeed your YUDEN000 T02 to 20x? Perhaps a Plextor PX-716A was more your fancy, along with the Plextor Premium? The “_NEC” ND-3520A? An Optiarc AD-7201S?
The LG 4163B, hands down. As long as I fed it good media, it trumped the other drives I owned at the time, every time. I was devastated when its burn quality began to decline.
Only downside of this drive - well, the one I owned anyway! - was that it was very, very particular about media. A price I was willing to pay, though
Following on from your comment about your 4166B and RICOHJPN R03, my 4163B didn’t like it, either - used to spit it out as soon as it realised what was in there!
A very close second to that though, would be my Sammy SH-S182D - burned everything, from good media to crap, that I chucked at it. So I bought another, and still own both
My third and last favourite drive was my LiteOn 1693S, helped along with C0deKing’s KC4B firmware. That drive would also burn anything
To accompany THAT question, I also must ask: what burner have you just wished you could reduce to a smoldering heap of silicon and plastic? What drive made you so angry that you literally took a hammer to it? Was it a BTC? An odd little Optiarc AD-7170A/Plextor PX-800A? A BenQ DQ60/Plextor PX-750A? Maybe a Samsung TS-H552B/TS-H552U?
I never had the “privelege” of owning a BTC - or even a Matsushita (sorry, Chad :p), come to that.
Although I’ve not owned any really dire drives, the one that disappointed me most was my first drive, a LiteOn LDW-851S (later crossflashed, which did improve things!).
