What's Up With Nero?

I was just on my weekly visit to www.nero.com to see if there were any updates (cough! cough!) and I noticed that they'd removed the Neromix and Photo Express thingie downloads completely from the site. Hmmmmmm! What's up with that?

Also, the latest version, 6.6.0.6, seems to have introduced data verification errors when writing a data disc to DVD where previous versions (at least the ones I used) were not. This is pissing me off. I've gotten data verification failures on 2 DVDs (1 +R and 1 -R) I just burned (off the same exact project file, no less!). This really is not acceptable.

Anyone else notice this?

Yep, it's come up in quite a few threads. Mostly those data verification errors are wrong, as the data has been written correctly. Of course the whole point of verifying your data is lost if you can't trust whether a verification failure from Nero is true or not.

I've thrown away loads of discs thinking I had a bad batch, when in fact it was Nero showing verification errors where none existed.

Dare I ask, does this issue affect other version of Nero, or just 6.6.0.6?

IIRC, I saw the issue come in at about 6.6.0.1, and it's gotten more or less intermittent as new versions come out. You think it's fixed by a new release, and then it comes back. Basically anything written as DAO will give a verification error, while TAO is fine.

It's weird though as when using 6.6.0.6, as I had one image that burned six discs (three manufacturers) in a row that all came up with this spurious error and all were fine when reading back. One smaller image burned fine second time around, and a third, larger image burned with no errors the first time around.

In all cases these fake verification errors appeared at 98 percent just as the buffer started emptying out and the disc speed slowed right down before going back up again.

I would hate to think how many disks I've binned because they failed the verification stage.

I use it because I can't always afford high quality media, and try to get the best from the cheaper disks (Datawrite, Bulkpaq, etc).

Well verification is a basic function that all writing software should be able to do, but Nero seems to have this DAO bug. Just because you use cheaper media, there's no reason for these high levels of verification failure - the same discs will write well using other programs, older versions of Nero, or even Nero 6 in TAO mode.

Thanks for confirming this for me. I did indeed try reading all the files on the DVDs and could find no errors. This is extremely annoying. To the Nero rep, is this being addressed?

If you revert back to a previous version, does this behaviour change?

I've gone back real far...back to v5.5.10.56 (no joke!) and have experienced no errors like the ones I've reported. I like consistency, and so far v5.5 gives me that. Nero 6.6.0.6 is inconsistent and I feel uncomfortable using it (in the sense that I know I'll just be creating coasters). I really like the other modules in the suite but I rely on the burner module the most and it's really not up to par, in my opinion. I just don't get these errors with v5.5 that I get with 6.6.0.6.

I'm lucky enough to have 5.5.10.56 on one Pc, and 6.6.0.6 on another....

What about an earlier version of Nero 6 (like Nero 6.3)?

If you have 6.6.0.6 installed can you just re-install 6.6.0.3 over it and go back to 6.6.0.3?

can v5.5.10.56 handle dvd-burning and bitsetting? if so i'm able to consider a downgrade cause it seems like ahead is producing more bugs constantly. maybe winoncd may be an option aswell.

You will have to uninstall the Nero program from your computer and then install the older version of Nero. If the installer detects a newer version of the program, it will not install.
