Several possiblities here.

Firstly this:-
CdRomPeripheral : DVDR/RW DX162D-A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

Enable DMA on it. Check this link .

Secondly why the 2.4x burn speed? Did the burner not give the option of 4x which I think is the rated speed of this rewritable.

Finally for DVD+RW I’d go for Verbatim or Ricoh. Ritek don’t seem to be the best.

sorry I took so long to get back timc, I did switch my dma back(reinstalled driver)soon after posting this.secondly I just thought the slower the speed the better.finally I will check into some verbatrim.

thanks for the help

Hi Everyone:

After reading postings in this and other forums, my conclusion is that DVD write failures using Nero is due to USB timing rather than functional errors (e.g., old drivers). Currently, I have no longer sufferring from burn failures.

My Configuration (not the greatest):

 • IBM Thinkpad A3p
 • Pretty old Pioneer DVD +/- RW drive on USB 2.0 port via PCMCIA card
 • Data source from C: drive or external Firewire drive.

Before burning a DVD:

 • Unplug all other devices from PCMCIA USB 2.0
 • Terminate res.exe
 • Start burn process.

Differences:

 • No more SCSI command failures
 • Buffer level stays above 90% (used to drop to 10% or less)
 • Can burn DVDs without failures.

Other helpful steps:

 • Use Nero to check maximum write speed (4X for me)
 • Run Nero in simulation until settings are dialed-in.

My actual process:

 • Followed various advices (nothing helped)
 • Used TweakNow PowerPack 2006 to change Nero priority to real-time (failure)
 • Burned only from Fireware or C: source (less failures)
 • Removed all other USB devices (about the same)
 • Used TweakNow PowerPack 2006 to kill all processes not related to DVD burning (buffer stayed above 90% and no burn failures)
 • Restarted PC and started burn simulation
 • Used TweakNow PowerPack too terminate 1 process at a time until Nero buffer level remained stable above 90%) and found offending program to be res.exe.

Any explaination of the following would be very much appreciated:

 • Why the system worked fine after an OS rebuild and got progressively worse?
 • What does res.exe do?

Thanks.
