What resolution for iPod Touch

What screen resolution should I be using for the iPod Touch?

It is actually 480/360 but that is not a option in DVD Fab.

Which profile are you using for this? One of the iPods?

Yes

Tell me which one, I will modify it for you to include that size.

The actual resolution for the iPod Touch is 480 x 320. I want to purchase the software but that resolution is not one of the listed profiles. Could you please modify to include this resolution for the iPod Touch as one of the choices in the profiles. I would be most appreciative and then would gladly purchase the program to use with my new iPod Touch.
Thank you.

Steve C

oops. Forgot to mention the profile this should be under would be ipod.mpeg4

Thanks.

iPod Touch users: here is a profile that will let you install the Touch as a standalone device for easy access (fewer clicks). Highlight the indicated text (below) and copy it into Notepad or any other pure text editor, then save it to the DVDFab Profiles folder as iPodTouch.mpeg4.xml. Then open DVDFab, click on Common Settings and select “Customize UI”. Choose “DVD to Mobile” from the drop down selector. Choose one of the existing devices to move from the right column (active) to the left (inactive) by highlighting and using the left arrow button. Now click the New button near the bottom. At the top of the box that pops up is a drop down device selector; click on it and select iPodTouch; choose the icon you want and fill in the text areas (if you wish). DVDFab will restart with your new device as shown below. It has 480x320 and 480x270 sizes added and bitrate default set to 1200 kb/s, otherwise is identical to the iPod MPEG-4 profile which you reported was working for you. Post back in this thread if you have any problems with this.

Text to copy and paste:

/EDIT/ I notice that the forum editing software is putting an extra space in the “320x240” screen size on the line that says “size list”. If it pastes into Notepad with that space in there, take it out before saving.

hi, Paul

Thanks for your profile ! :flower:

I think the iPodTouch and iPhone has the same ability to play the mpeg4 and h264, so just need change the resolution to fit the screen size of them.

I will try to add the h264 profile for ipodTouch and iPhone, and add Paul’s mpeg4 profile in next beta version. if you have this device, please help us to test it.

a h264 profile for iPodTouch

Is there any reason for the bitrate to be set to 1200 and the max bitrate to 2500 in Signal’s profile. Couldn’t they be set lower??
These high bitrates of 1200 and 2500 make for a very large size transfer.

How about a lower setting for these values?

Steve C

You can set them wherever you like using the bitrate slider on the Configure screen. The 1200 is just a default starting point, where the slider will be when you open the program; the 2500 is just the max. I think you will find that the files produced, especially at small screen sizes, will be much smaller than indicated on the configure screen and have lower video bitrates (probably on the order of 700-750kb/s) even with the slider at 1200. You can edit the default to any value you like, it is in the “encode codec” line, just below the “output fps”.

I am set up and running the iPod Touch MPEG4 profile right now for use on my iPhone.

I will provide feedback once it is finished.

On a sidenote will these profiles be deleted or revised with an update?

I sort of modified some of the names and placements of both since I do not own an iPod touch.

I placed both of these profiles under an “iPhone” device. So now when I click on the “iPhone” device button both profiles appear there. I also created a default that autoselected the new resolution, bumped the volume to 300 and 128 kpbs.

Also was iPodTouch added to the latest update? I may have unintentionally saved it as a device as well so I removed it from the profile folder and left what I had done.

Thank you very much for creating these!!

Glad they worked for you. These have not been included in a release yet, but if the released ones have the same name they should not be overwritten. I have lots of custom devices and profiles and I have another folder where I archive them. They may not be standalone “devices” when they are part of a release, so I would do the same just to be safe.

Signals, thank you, that is exactly what I did–create a folder in documents as a backup.

This resolution doesn’t seem to make a significant difference on the iPhone screen (which is the same size as the Touch). To clarify, it does work very well with this screen, but I was using the 640x352 as my previous default and it seemed to work just fine as well.

Of course it does make the viewing window smaller when watching them on my computer. I plan on using this resolution with a full screen movie and seeing how that works.

I like storing them so I don’t need to carry too many discs on trips as well. So I may stick with the other profiles that seem to be slightly more versatile when viewing on other screens.

What I have been trying to figure out is how to get the WS to be full screen on the iPhone. This screen is small enough as it is so there no need to make it smaller with black bars across the top. A little stretch would be alright by me.

Strange I have just tried this with spiderman 3 and I get quite a small letterbox on my screen. Picture is full width but about 1cm bars top and bottom. I used 420*320.

Is there anything I can do do get it full screen?

Same here, that is exactly what I have been playing with. I think that importing the movie in full screen (4:3) and using the 420x320 will yeild the best results.

I just did this with a movie that I have with both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. In 4:3 it seems to yeild the best results that I have seen so far. There are still spaces on the edges of the screen. But top to bottom is completely filled in.

I also ran a google search on convert 16:9 to 4:3 and it looks like there are a few posts. THe debate then rests on what you might be cutting out or distorting.

I am of the mind that with such a small screen more is definitely better.

I am pretty sure that windows movie maker does this, but then you are stuck with a WMV file that you will need to then covert again…

I guess if I played this movie on my widescreen TV I would still have bands top and bottom.

If I converted this file with the standard iPod profile I get black bands top and bottom as well as the sides.

DVDfab has crashed repeatedly this evening. I was concerned that it was these profiles, but it did just fine on other movies yesterday. I am trying another movie to see if it is specific to the one that I was trying to convert. I tried making iso and ts folders on my computers HD to create iPhone/iPod version of this movie and those crashed as well.

Here is what I placed in the profile folders, do you see anything wrong? If there is can I delete and reinstall DVDFab and if I do will my key work again?

EDIT:
It looks like it may be the movie itself…it seems to happen at around the same time.

Exactly when does the crash happen? The profiles look fine, and if they worked once they should work until the moon falls.

Thanks for looking at the profiles. I was thinking the same thing, I just wasn’t sure if they could cause any instability with DVDFab.

The crash happens around 1.95-1.98% into the conversion.

Edit:
I have a movie in process that seems to be working just fine right now. So the issues must stem from a problem with the movie that was causing the crash. Odd that I could get the movie onto my HD but couldn’t encode it. Would DTS audio cause this?

I think that I am having issues. The new movie failed at 54%. DVDFab did not crash it did slow to a halt then asked to open pathplayer instead and made me start from scratch.
