What is your favorite brand of bulk dye ink?

I did a lot of cyber-shopping and read many reviews before choosing a bulk ink manufacturer and distributer to feed my hungry R220. I really wanted a CIS system but none of the popular suppliers would state the brand of ink they contained. Since the vast majority of Epson CIS systems are manufactured in China, I have a strong hunch most of these contain ink from there too. (I have no doubt that some MIC ink is very good. The problem is that the rest can be of very poor quality and there is no way of knowing the quality of the batch you recieve…) A few Epson CIS sellers offer “German” ink, but there again, they don’t give specifics…

There were a few MIC dry CIS systems available, which would have been ideal for me so I could buy bulk ink from a known high-quality/consistent-quality source, but these were priced much higher than the wet systems they sold, a likely ploy to direct a buyer to thier pre-filled setups containing mystery ink that they promise to be great.

In the end, (and because I already had two dry oem carts, was concerned the head would have a terminal clog – so basically was out of time) I chose a non-CIS setup by an Ebay seller who offered Image Specialists inks, repackaged under his own Precision Colors brand. Now here is an ink that you know where it comes from – a manufacturer which primarily serves printing professionals. That is what I was looking for.

For $20-$30 less than the average retail cost of a single set of T48 Epson OEM carts, I got a set of pre-filled auto-reset, spongeless, in-printer refillable carts along with enough ink for 12 complete refills. Despite already having two missing colors on my print head and expecting quite a few cleaning cycles before they came back, (IF they came back :o ), I was rewarded with a perfect nozzle test print 5 minutes after installation with only the default new cart prime/clean cycle. I don’t know if I would have had the same result with “mystery” ink…

As advertised, the Image Specialists ink I’m using produces identical results to Epson OEM inks. No need to adjust color settings or profiles for the new ink. I’m very satisfied with the results.

In the week since I installed this new ink setup I’ve noticed another brand out there with a lot of fans – HobbyColors – IIRC? Yet IIRC, this is also a brand name for repackaged ink from a high-quality but un-named manufacturer. (Who knows, perhaps Image Specialists?) At any rate there are a lot of buyers who trust the brand and so it must be good and consistent. Might have given them a try had I known of them earlier…

I still seek bulk ink for my Canon i560, iP4500 and MX700, along with proven reliable auto-reset carts (the i560 is chipless) and/or decent CIS. Your experience with these would be appreciated!

In conclusion, I’d appreciate any info/recommendations you guys may have regarding your favorite and trusted inks, aftermarket carts and/or CIS systems. This info will be helpful to most people reading this forum… :flower:

I use Hobbicolors UW-8 ink in my Canons with superb results.
Dave at Hobbicolors is another outstanding seller of high quality inks, specializing in products for Canon printers.

Image Specialists ink has a huge following also.
I see that you have purchased IS ink from “mikling” (PrecisionColors)…he is a respected member at Nifty-Stuff and always gets positive feedback on his products

There’s no ARC chip for the Canons…you need a resetter if you want to retain ink monitoring.
Sudhaus brand, made in Germany is the favorite.

Use only genuine Canon carts for refilling.

There are two Canon refill methods, top fill or end (German) fill.

Hmmm…these are new.
Haven’t seen any feedback yet.
At this price, I would stay with the resetter for the time being. As with the resetter, the price will soften.
Mapsy has been a trusted seller.
Thanks for the post, RookieRipper :iagree:
Right you are about the purchase. I thought I saw a user named “mikling” in a popular inkjet related forum… Nice to know he’s one of the “good guys” and I found a decent ink supplier.

Looks like they are indeed a new item. I bumped into the store of your second link a couple of days ago and “mapsy” appears to be a great Ebay seller.

Thanks for the help, guys!

mikling is testing these and reports that so far they are working.

Thanks for the info, I bought a refurb r800 a few years ago and I basically only use it for photo printing and disks. I’ve been through a few sets of carts all ready and it’s getting very hard to find good remans or compatibles with Epson suing everybody or whatever they’re doing lately. I got some very nice carts from Abucus but they no longer seem to carry the compatibles for this guy, they have them for my older R200 again:a
I just fired it up to do some glossy case lables for my step dads band and it printed them perfectly after sitting there left on unused for about 6 months.
Carts are all about 30 percent full at this point so soon I’ll need another set so I have bookmarked his Ebay store.
I do think leaving the priner on helps with the heads not clogging by the way…
I use a old HP 990 Tank for my everyday printouts, it does a phenomal job on regular paper and also with remans is not so bad to run.
