What is the spike of C2 errors at the start of a disk?

I have used the disk quality scan on a selection of different disks on different burners at different speeds with different prograns, but almost all of them have a spike of C2 errors right at the start of the disk (~0 minutes), anywhere from 10 to a few hundred.

Is this due to how my burner reads the disks (Liteon SHW-16HS5), is it normal, is it of any concern and what should I do to avoid it?

I am sorry if I have missed another thread on this topic, I did a few searches and couldn’t find one.

Here are some scans.

(Another apology now… there was no edit button so I have double posted. )

It may be the drive, if i recall liteon dvd writers are not very good cd scanners.

try changing the spin-up time from the default 10 seconds to 15 seconds (found under Options|Standard Tests)…then re-run the test on the same CD…see if that eliminates that initial C2 spike

I don’t think I’d be using a LiteOn DVD burner to scan CDRs, they’re not exactly accurate IMO.

Do you have a BenQ, Plextor DVD burner or maybe a LiteOn CDRW drive?

BTW, welcome to the forum

They’re not accurate but to some extent consistent…

It appears it is just the way my drive reads it. I tried another pressed disk and this time it recorded a few C2 errors at the beggining (though it was only 4 so a lot fewer than with CDRs). Perhaps I was just lucky when I tried with a few pressed disks yesterday and none of them came up with any errors.

I have an NEC labelflash recorder that came up with no C2 errors on the same CDRs given above and will try on a Hitachi DVD RAM this evening.

Changing the spinup time appears to make little difference.

Thanks for all the replies though.

The NEC is an accurate CD scanner so use the NEC instead

I’d use the NEC as well (you don’t say which model it is, but my 4551A’s pretty good). I like to scan at 32x for CDRs on my NEC.
