It has a coating that is similar to the coating on premium inkjet paper. This coating allows the disc to be printed on by an injet printer. Ther are a few available printers that can feed a CDR, and a couple more that you can buy kits for to convert to CDR printing. Epson and Canon are 2 that come to mind.
Incidentally, the coated CDR's are also very good for marking on with most any pen or pencil.
