What is a good sata burner to get?

hi

ive been out of the loop when it comes to dvd burner technology since my gsa-4160… now ive been planning on updating my ide burner to a sata burner… i looked at top 5 optical drives of 2008

http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/top-5-optical-drives-2008-cd-freaks-members-choice-249785/

and it seems that the pioneer 115/215 is the best choice, but i read that it has booktype setting problems as in it doesnt have that feature…

the criteria im looking for a sata burner are:

-reliability
-good burn quality (SL and DL)
-good reading/ripping

any hlpe is greatly appreciated… thanks in advance

Try the Samsung SH-S203x - I’m loving mine, great burner and ripper/reader.

@ cmge,

Your above quoted statement is not totally factual.

Both the Pioneer DVR-215 (SATA) and DVR-216 (SATA) drives do have automatic Book Type Bit Setting of DL Media to DVD-ROM and this feature works flawlessly. With a simple firmware patch through the use of the Media Code Speed Edit tool (http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/) the Pioneer DVR-215 (SATA) and DVR-216 (SATA) will also automatically Book Type Bit Set SL Media to DVD-ROM.

bjkg[/QUOTE]Just to ad…neither will the Sammy drives bitset DVD+R’s without help. You will either need to set it in Nero CD-DVD Speed or ImgBurn for temporary or use C0deKings Sammy Patcher for permanent setting (this way will void your warranty as you will have to flash it with patched firmware).

My choices would be, first the 720xS then the 215 and last the 203x.

My 7200A beats all my other drives, but the 203 is a very fast reader.

oh ok… i was following this review which lead me to my assumption

http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Pioneer-DVR-115D-DVD-Burner-Review

and i compared it with

http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Samsung-SH-S203B-DVD-Burner-Review

now off i look for the sh-203b…

update:

since my last post ive been on the look out for the SH-203B, i managed to find one but for some reason it hangs my pc when i put in store pressed cd/dvds… ive sent it to RMA to the place i got it from and since they dont have any more SH-203B ive been suggested either DVR-216D or SH-S223F as a replacement…

which one is a better choice?

any help would be greatly appreciated… thanks

Well my Samsung 203B has been giveing me problems for a few weeks…Had an “I/O Device Error” on it yesterday n I’m NOT the only one around with this…Not yet 1 year old…I’ll NOT ever buy another Samsung SATA burner…
My IDE NEC 3540A is still working a treat…Took outa my old PC in incerted it into this un yesterday n it burns Better…
Perhaps the SAMSUNG IDE burners work better than the sata ones…

ok so let me go over my story here. I have purchased a HP dvd1070 and then a plextor px-850SA and I have been unable to change the bitsetting on either nor can I find firmware upgrades for either. I have since returned the plextor drive because I still had the ability to get my money back. I just want to confirm that if I buy one of these pioneer drives it will allow me to change the book type from DVD DL +R to dvd-rom as this is getting time consuming and expensive. or if there are any other suggestions as to a sata drive I could purchase that would allow this either with img burn or by some other means please let me know. I would appreciate anyones feedback

thanks
