What does what on the insides (Plextor PX-810SA DVD-ReWriter Black)

[qanda]This thread is about the Plextor PX-810SA. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Hello,

I’m trying to learn more about how drives work internally. I took apart a extra drive I have. It’s a Plextor PX-810SA

What are all the chips on the main board?

My guesses:

  1. Digital processor, Analog to digital, protocol processing, sata interface

I’m not sure on the others, shouldn’t there be a servo controller?

Also each chip on a number on them. How I can use that number to reference what it does, or get additional information.

The simplest thing to do is to search for the strings written on the chips with Google or some other search engine.

No. 3 is labelled “Hynix”. www.hynix.com is a manufacturer of memory chips. So this is likely some RAM or flash ROM type chip. If they have a produc catalogue online you can determine the exact nature of the chip.

I’m wondering what does the chip number 2? It has a metal part in the middle of it (in the picture, is covered with this grey plastic), most of my burners have this chip but I don’t know what is it’s function. Why the uncovered metal part? Weird isn’t it?
