What do you all think about this system?

Well I have a $750 budget to make a computer, with no monitor included, that can do pretty much everything, such as gaming, using word, but more for gaming than anything else. It is for my friend’s little boy. So I decided to to get the Corsair Value Ram 1gb for $168.00, Amd Athlon xp 3000 retail for $155, Asus “A7v600 -x” kt600 for $56.00, Nec floppy for $9.00, ATI 9600 Pro for $125.00, NEC dvd rw drive for $67, as for the case I think I will go with one of those xoxcide cases for somewhere in between 70-80 bucks, and a hard drive for under $70. When you total that all up, it comes out to around $724. Just curious of what others think, and please don’t tell me I should go with something that is out of my budget range. If someone has something better please let me know. Thanks

switch the case for the antec lanboy (same price point if i remeber rightly) and the mobo for a cheaper nf2 ultra board ( i have this one http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-150-045&depa=0 )to get dual channel support … 2x512MB of the corsair value might be a few dollars cheaper than the 1GB stick …

(edit) after looking, the lanboy (79$) doenst include PSU … but is quite nice none the less … if you have a spare 350w psu laying around, might be a better choice. you can get a 8mb/7200/80gb WD for 61$, and a 400w psu with blue 80&120mm fans for 23$ http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-167-007&DEPA=1 (/edit)

Why still go for a 32 bit system? For now they perform nice, but an XP 3000+ will faster be older than a 64 bit 3000+ will be. There is a slight difference in prince (about €15 for the CPU and €20 for the mainboard), but I think that’s worth it. The Athlon 64 3000+ is way faster than the XP 3000+ is, and it will even give you some higher performance in the near future, as 64bit software is about to enter the market.
If the price is too high, you could look into a Sempron CPU on the s754 platform. The Sempron 3100+ is about €20 cheaper than the XP 3000+ is and it performs about equal (it’s a 32bit CPU, based on the Athlon XP Thoroughbred-B on a 64bit enabled platform). By the time this CPU gets too slow, you’ll be able to get a 3700+ or so for a reasonable price; this gives you a nice chance to do an upgrade for not too much money.

not a bad system go to www.tigerdirect.com and find you a better ATI videocard that has atleast 8 pipes the 9600 has only 4 pipes

A 9800SE performs about the same as a 9600XT but it offers the ability to softmod (unlock the four remaining pipelines) which will give you significant performance boost. Although you aren’t garantueed that it’ll work but if it doesn’t work you can revert back to 4 pipelines of course.

Look Im Running an AMD 64 3400, 1gig Kingmax Supper ram, FX5700 ultra
have win 64 coming soon

my old pc was a XP 2000 1gig and was fine, the truth is whilst 64 sounds good at this time there is not much out there for them, Even so Longhorn the NEW WINDOWS out 2005 end or 2006 there will be two versions a 32os and 64os

My self i feel there is no benifit in windows in fact it runs slightly slower on this beast.

That said games are dam good… But a xp 2800 and a Nvidia GT6200 s-its allover my pc. My freinds pc.

Now who can spend ??? for that card so soon but the point is if your a gamer you’ll go big with the graphics and semi hevay waight on the CPU.

Then you’re doing something wrong, A64 is noticable faster than Barton CPUs.
