That is if you could trust tests by results only.
In the past I had quite some doubts about the climatic stability test itself.
While the truth is that the media itself might be responsible for a much larger variation.
From my own experience though, count me in the “most people” group.
Though I admit that I’d still use MCC 02RG20 rather than MCC004 if I could find good sources in my area. When I stated having trouble to find these, I moved to MCC 004 and I don’t regret it in the least, as in real-world use they are just as stable as MCC 02RG20. Trust me on this, I’m a stability freak.
MCC004 and MCC02RG20 should have the same reliability if all parameters are controlled nicely. (Burnstrategy, Media build quality)
It shouldn’t matter which ones you would use.
Okay in theory the 8x special verbatims have an advantage when they work right. But the combinations of gold and silver layers does have a influence on the burning strategy, which make it questionable if your really going to win.
For TAIYO YUDEN - I would suggest go for the ones which are good bonded and will work nicely with your drive. Now here’s the problem my experience is that 16x TY’s are having less fluctuations with bonding as the older stuff.
However 16x media does have the problem that the burning strategies for the media are inferior to the 8x media.
I would suggest a 8x burning speed for all those media. A 4x speed may be looked into. But most likely with modern drives 8x will give you the best quality.
Though they most of the time don’t scan so well, I have no problem recommending them to most of my acquaintances. They’re not as “universal” (I’m referring to compatibility with all kinds of readers) as the 8X MCC02RG20, but still more compatible than, say, TYG02 (a very overhyped disc model IMHO).
People on this board are mainly complaining because of the not-so-good-looking PIE/PIF scans with MCC 03RG20.
Initial scans are overhyped on this board.
Don’t know if TYG02 was overhyped. I would think that YUDEN000T02 was overhyped much more on the boards. Ooh and I think TY in general is a bit overhyped for dvd recordables on the internet.
The reason why I personally stick with +R MCC004 is not the prettier scans (though I do appreciate them ), but the fact that I use mainly printable media. And for whatever reason, I always seem to find only printable +R 16X Verbs, not printable -R 16X Verbs… go figure.
So your missing out on the more fancy glossy ones or the gold ones so far ?
As for climatic tests, they are extremely reliable per se when conducted by serious teams. But what is very questionable is the extrapolation about how discs will behave in normal use. Any “laboratory” test has this limitation.
Well the translation has it’s problems. But the media fluctuations are far more tricky for most media.
