What can cause this error?

Okay, here it is. After sereval hours spend behind my new computer, I noticed that in four days it stopped responding for the third time now. I replaced the video card and SB. If the error persists, I’ll change also RAM. If this doesn’t help, I’ll go for another MB. I think that MB is the last level in this.

Okay, the error sounds like this. This is not actual recording when the error jumps in, but it’s pretty much the same. The computer stops responding, but I can see my DSL modem still receiving and sending.

Okay, can it be hard drive? I damn hope not! Or CPU? My friend had the same issue, and he changed the MB and the problems was solved …

You mean the system freezes? There is a variety of possible causes. Maybe your CPU overheats or your power supply is insufficient.

For testing, open your tower and see if the problem persists.

I really checked the temp. Average temperature is 58-59° C but at full load it goes over 73° C with no problems, so the temperature isn’t the issue.

The average load was 5 % and I only ran some downloading stuff (emule, torrent) and mp3. That’s all. CPU isn’t suffering because I monitor it all the time.

Those are pretty high temps. Depending on how it’s measured, the actual die temp could be much higher.

Freezes are often caused by CPU issues, but I would also rule out bad RAM. Get Memtest86 and run it for at least 6-8 hrs with no errors to confirm your RAM is good.

Lastly, the most common cause of a freeze is software. You can’t rely on a CPU monitor, cause the system is frozen and won’t display the correct value.

rdgrimes, yes, I’m aware of that, too. I really don’t trust the monitoring stuff, but I really don’t know what to do at this point.

I’ll continue trying various hardware, which has been already tested. Now I have old graphic card and SB and thus far no error has been found, and the computer for 10 hrs now. Usually I got the error somewhere between 10-20 hrs of uptime. I’ll see …

Can you list your system specs?

PSU? RAM? M/B? CPU? Avg Temps? HDD setup?

Are you plugged in directly… maybe electrical spikes from the outlet?.. might be lucky your PC didn’t blow… hehehe … um okay its not funny

Some are around 82Watts but some cut at 89Watts, your mercury PSU cuts close off at around 90Watts, and you might have a bit of Power lag to the CPU, hence the freezing.

I found your PSU here, specs here, correct me if I am wrong.
CPU rail (3.3v @ only 28A = ~90Watt) \me thinks is too low…

My suspicions is not enough Power form the Mercury PSU.

PSU, RAM is Viking 512 MB 400, MB is Abit IC7-G, Avg. CPU temp. is somewhere 60° C, PSU 40° C, MB 30° C, HDD is one SATA and one slave on primary IDE.

Forgot to add: Right now I’m running the comp. with my old SB Live and Radeon 9000 and works fine for 35 hrs now.

My Radeon 9550 has a fan on the plate. Can this cause the error and lack the PSU power or it’s not a big deal really?

Found it!! It’s SL7E4. I’ve found the pictures of the CPU before I installed it.

Well, according to here, it requires 89Watts. Your Mercury can maxx out at supplying 92.4Watts. Thats awfully close because thats max output, and therefore it’s never constant. I wouldn’t be surprised if its being under-powered. I don’t wanna sound like a broken record in every post I make of the same recommendation, but, get an ANTEC. I suggest a 480Watt True Power Supply from them.

BTW, your CPU threshold is at 69.1C so you are also getting high temps. What heatsink are you using? Fan…RPM/CFM outputs?

I am assuming that the error is whether in new VGA card or SB card. My uptime now is 50 hrs and no errors thus far.

I asked you about the VGA fan, because it’s now necessary that any of the part if broken. Maybe there’s really a lack of power as you said. Sorry, you live in USA and you can pieces I can’t get. That’s the market, sorry. :slight_smile: I am looking for something higher than 480. I was thinking about 550 W.
