What am I doing WRONG?! FRUSTRATED

Okay, I’ve sat down all day today trying to get my DVD-R to work correctly. I’m using DVD-Shrink 3.0 beta, to extract and Nero 6.3.0.0 to burn. I have a Lite-on LDW-411s. I’ve already updated the firmware of the drive to FS0F. The media I’m using is Ritekg04. Here is the Smartburn report of the disks:

      Drive Type = DVD DUAL
Disc Type = DVD-R (Single Layer)
      Disc MID = 52 49 54 45 4B 47 (RITEKG)
      Disc TID = 00 04 30 34 00 00 (..04..)

Nominal Capacity = 4.38GB
Manufacturer Maybe = RiTEK Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 4.0X (Write)

The common errors I’m getting are at the end of the burn. I either get “session fixation error”, or “power calibration error”. If its not one, then its the other. I’ve tried 4x and 2x burning speeds. I’ve tried to trouble-shoot just about everything. The only thing I haven’t tried is alternate media. I’ve been told though, that the media I’m using right now is pretty decent. Please let me know any other ideas.

My computer setup is as follows:

MSI 648 Neo (updated latest firmware for everything)
P4 2.4 800FSB
512mb DDR400 3200
Maxtor 120HDD master
West.Dig.40HDD slave
LiteOn LDW-411s DVDRW master
CD-ROM F5D (OEM?) slave
Nvidia Gforce4 Ti4200
Windows 2000 SP4.

I’ll post one of the log files from Nero as well if that helps. (If not all this info is required, I apologize - I’m just wanting to supply as much info as I can.)

Try different media!!
These media may work great on another drive but maybe not on yours. The errors you get are typical for a drive having problems with the used media.
Don’t forget that your drive is relatively new and also DVD recording is relatively new. There will be drive-media incompatibilities for quite a while.

the ritek G04 should ONLY be burned at 4x in the 411S, results at 2x are terrible, (but great at 4x). Without seeing an error scan on your trouble discs, it’s impossible to say if you have a media problem or something else. You may just have a bad batch. also, based on your posted log, it appears you are doing something other than a straight data burn, what is it that’s being burned? If you’re trying to burn a movie, your settings are all wrong.

what should my settings be then for trying to burn movies? i’m pretty new at this, so not sure what needs to be done. all i’m doing is ripping it with dvd-shrink 3.0 beta 5, then burning it with nero 6.3. i haven’t made any setting changes. let me know what settings to change so i can give that a shot! thanks a lot for the responses.

heikes

HERE’S a good tutorial on burning with Nero.
http://www.dvdshrink.info/nero-video.php

also, today i got bored - that combined with the frustration i decided to wipe my computer and start fresh. i updated all the software that i needed. installed nero 6.3, and backed up a movie in 2x w/ the media that i stated. works fine in my standalone. i tried a second disc thinking that was my problem and got another session fixation error? could the discs just be that on/off? like 3 bad, 1 good, 1 bad, 2 good, etc? i’m going to go check out that page right now RD, thanks.

heikes

could the discs just be that on/off? like 3 bad, 1 good, 1 bad, 2 good, etc?

Yes, but without seeing error scans, it’s impossible to say for sure.

In your case I’d recommend an easy ‘click’n’go’-tool like (DCS) - don’t worry, only the HP is german. This prog is my favourite. Or use CloneDVD (lacks some features IMO) or Nero Recode 2 (bad quality).
This way you make sure you don’t select any wrong options as the standard settings should work fine normally.

would that be the report from the kprobe software i d/l’d? i tried to use it, but i wasn’t sure how to read what it was telling me. should i run the report and post it? if so, which reports do i need to run. there were quite a bit of tabs, and in each tab looked like it had some drop down windows to go with. haha. anyways, thanks again. i appreciate the help greatly.

suggest reading the tutorials on Kprobe in the Kprobe thread and in the DVD test forum.
