Wav compression

HI all,

A newbie in Audio and working on a tutorial cd. I have some avi files and some wav files (Audio format: PCM 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono) which i will then use the Macromedia Director to make my tutorial for the windows based computers.

Wav files are large files and I would like to compress them. Now, the question is, what is the best way to compress the wav files whithout losing it’s quality ? I need The converted file to be played in a windows based system without need for any codec.

thanks in advance

This may depend on how far back you need compatability, Is this for windows 95 or even win 3.11?

For fairly modern OS, Microsoft’s own WMA codec or the MP3 codec are good choices for quality/file size ratio (Support for playback of both should be standard). Other more compatible codecs are not so good either in quality or file size.
