Want to edit, compress and convert into MPEG4 in a high quality

Hi, can anyone give me their expert advice? I’ve got a number of DVDs which I want to edit, compress and convert into MPEG4 in a high quality. I don’t plan to make dvd copies just copy onto my hard drive.
There are so many products on the market but I don’t know which ones I need. As far as I’m aware there are are no encryption on any DVDs.

Also after I’ve copied onto my hard drive in MPEG4 can I convert into other formats such as windows media on my hard drive? Thanks in advance

AutoGK or Gordian Knot are both great free apps to make DivX or XviD MPEG4.
