VLC Media Player Updates

Every VLC version after 2.1.5 has a problem with embedded Timed Text subtitles in MP4 files; the font size is ridiculously tiny. It’s incredible that this hasn’t been fixed in over a year!

Only recent nightly builds of the 3.0.0 branch have fixed this problem, so I’m staying on 2.1.5 until a working version is released.

I don’t have problem with VLC with mp4 format subtitles.
I don’t have problem with VLC with mp4 format subtitles.
The problem is only with embedded (internal) subtitles in Timed Text format, not with external subtitles nor with VobSub or PGS subtitles nor with MKV files.
The problem is only with embedded (internal) subtitles in Timed Text format, not with external subtitles nor with VobSub or PGS subtitles nor with MKV files.
So what would qualify for timed text format?
So what would qualify for timed text format?
Pretty much any program that can merge external SRT subtitles into an MP4 file will make a Timed Text Subtitle inside the MP4 file. Timed Text is the normal embedded subtitle format in MP4 files.

I know that the tiny font size problem is not due to a configuration of my system, as the exact same problem when I install VLC 2.2.x on a clean system in a virtual machine. Since I use embedded MP4 subtitles a lot, the VLC 2.2.x branch is unusable for me.

VLC Media Player 2.2.4 (32-bit) download

I had to stay behind even a little before DrageMester as I mostly listen to music and they discontinued support for MIDI (FluidSynth and hence the use of SoundFonts .sf2) after v2.0.8.

Would anyone reading the thread know how to bring it back (re-register, patch or otherwise)? I am fully aware that they did so due to a security flaw in FluidSynth, but that I have worked around and fixed.

A major version of VLC has just been released. It is VLC 3.0.0.

Changes between 2.2.8 and 3.0.0:

Platform support changes:

  • 3.0.x will be maintained as a LTS (best-effort basis, mostly for security) that will be the last working version for quite a few systems.
Indeed the 3.0.x branch will contain the last releases running on: - Windows XP, Vista, and the servers equivalent of those Windows versions - macOS 10.7, 10.8 & 10.9, iOS 7 & 8 - Android 2.x, 3.x, 4.0.x & 4.1.x - Compilers before gcc 5.0 and clang 3.4, or equivalent

  • For the 3.0 branch, please note: * The Windows XP/2003/2003R2 support for VLC is now on a best-effort basis: it should work, but not without limitations. libVLC support for Windows XP is deprecated. You really should upgrade to a more modern Windows version! * Windows Vista (all versions) without Platform Upgrade is not supported. * 64bit version of VLC for Windows is recommended. * Linux support requires now a kernel newer than 2.6.26. * Mac OS X 10.6 support is now removed. You need OS X 10.7.
