Video's can't play on Win98

Allright this is my problem.

I’ve got a few wmv-files (Windows Media Files), which I can’t open.

I think because I need a newer Media Player.

But when I want to install Windows Media Player 9 on my PC it refuses, because you need at least Win98 SE.

Is there a version of Windows Media Player 9 that can be installed on Win98 or is there another program that you guys recommend that can play all new video’s and is free to download (like Windows Media Player)??

Links are appreciated.

tried Media player classic?

Gonna try it tonight.

you may want to see which windows media codec you have installed. while you cant have the latest player, you can more likely than not get the latest codec, which should solve the problem hopefully.

And how do I find out which codecs I have installed?

Have you installed any codec packs? (i should have suggested them first but misunderstood your question :o ) or other players like Divx. If not I suggest you get the Klite codec pack it has pretty much all you’ll need. You can get it Here it’s 8.3Mb

no clue on finding what codecs you have installed, insofar as wmp goes. i imagine that you would have whichever one corresponds to the version of wmp on your pc. you can always upgrade to the latest ones from MS by going to their website.

See my first post below, those won’t install under Win98.

7.1 should. i think you can set it to acquire codecs automatically.

on this page http://www.softlandmark.com/VideoEncoder.htm

i found a link to http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/8/a/98a6cb2d-6659-485e-b1f9-2c0d9bf6c328/wmv9VCMsetup.exe

which is supposed to allow legacy programs to use wmp9 codecs.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/0/3/a0398036-25b9-410c-b371-c59957c1b0f4/WM9Codecs.exe

is supposed to be the wmp9 codecs, for use on any 32bit windows system.

oops, both download links are found on this page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

have fun

Thanks ckin2001.

I’ve downloaded those files and will try it this weekend.

I tried RealPlayer8 and Media Player Classic, but both needed new codecs, and I don’t have internet at home :a :frowning: :a !!

Hope this codecs work. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

best of luck  - yet another reason to not use proprietary software, though.

You can sometimes right click on the file, go to properties and see what it says about the codec
