Look in the transcoding forum here. Recommended: DVD Shrink for speed or DVD-Rebuilder for quality.
Most commercial DVDs are dual layer (DVD9) and can contain up wards of 7GB of data. If your using a single layer drive (DVD5) to make your copy (as most of us are) you will need to compress and or rebuild your copy. I myself use DVD Shrink and Nero to make backups and have had great results. Animated movies like Shrek can be compressed quite a bit without any noticeable degradation.
DVD Shrink is free by the way. Check out http://dvdshrink.info/ for great guides and other shrink related goodies.
If you don’t want to buy Nero you can use Dvd shrink with Dvd decryptor They are both freeware and can be downloaded from http://doom9.org it works just as good
