Video Conversion Software - .mkv

Alright, so I’ve got a ton of MKV files on my computer. For those of you who are unawares, MKV is a somewhat obscure video format developed in Russia by the Matroska development team in Russia ( which is similar to the MPEG-4 standard.

My main issue is that I am unable to find any software which can reliably convert it into standard MPG/MPEG-4 files of reliable quality. A friend of mine lent me his serial keys with which I downloaded River Past Video Cleaner and the MPEG-4 booster pack, but the end result is always something which has horrible quality and no sound, or refuses to play at all. TMPGEnc will actually convert the videos…kinda. But the end result is really choppy and painful to watch.

Do any of you know of any video conversion programs which will reliably convert an .MKV straight from the original file to MPG/MPEG-4? If so, you would have my eternal gratitude.

Thanks in advance.

Despite your statement regarding Matroska and wrong information regarding it I have to say the MKV is the best container around.
What you need is mkvtoolnix and can be found here:
If you want to convert use Avisynth to process the clips and feed the avs file into your conversion program.
