Verbatim is now selling a “Value Series” of retail packaged tape-wrapped media (no cakebox).

So far, I’ve only seem them listed on the Fry’s Electronics web site:

One thing I just noticed is that there is no AZO logo. That means that these are not made with MCC dyes, and are not MCC 03RG20 or MCC 004. It could be that this is the long awaited arrival of the Ritek-manufactured Verbatim from South America.

The only thing that would make this a positive develpment is if the +R is good-quality RICOHJPN R03.

The Ritek manufactured Verbatim +R are RITEK R05 and the quality is average to very good ( batch variable ). The -R is low quality RITEK F1.

#4

“long awaited” … really? :stuck_out_tongue:

I was being diplomatic. The more accurate phrase would have been “long dreaded”. :stuck_out_tongue:

RITEK R05 is essentially the same dye as RICOHJPN R03, so that’s consistent with a lot of people’s experiences.

We’ll have to wait and see if someone decides to test them and report back.

I used RITEK R05 ( Verbatim 16x +R 50pc ) over last 2 years. In the same batch the results are consistent. From a batch to another the quality varies alot but never to be bad quality.

I doubt these will be Ritek R05 in the Value Series – more likely Ritek F16 – as far as I know, Ritek lost their contract with Ricoh to make RicohJPNR03, so that would mean they wouldn’t have the dye around anymore. Like Negritude says, Ritek R05 is made with Ricoh stampers. I’ll have to grab a pack of these to test when I see them at Fry’s.

Does that mean that RICOHJPN R03 is almost extinct? Can you still find it under any name-brands these days?

It’s a shame that there are so many good 16x MIDS which have disappeared or become impossible to find the last several years. We wouldn’t have to be so darn dependent on Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden if Optodisc, Daxon, and Ricoh were still out there in abundance, and if Prodisc hadn’t imploded.

Yes, RicohJPN R03 MIT is becoming extinct. The last production year was 2007. It may still be being made in India and in UAE, but I have not been able to get any spindles here in the US. If I happen onto a good brand of Ricoh, I’ll make sure to bring it to everyone’s attention.

If you’ll notice, Ricoh branded packs are disappearing at vendors as well.

The Value series is showing to be in stock at my local Fry’s – I’ll see about swinging by this week to pick up a pack of +R for testing.

Hmmmm… I just wonder if I’d have as bad of luck and bad of burns with those Verbatim Value
disc’s as I have had before with the TY Value line of disc’s? Oh what the heck it’s only money I’ll go
ahead and try them out because like they say you only live once and they can’t be as bad as some of
the other crap disc I’ve tried to burn before.

The mystery will soon be revealed. I am just back from Fry’s – I picked up one of the +R packs. Both the -R and +R are MIT (all the stock they had was MIT as far as I could tell). I’m pretty sure from reading the hub codes on the bottom of the pack that the -R are CMC MAG AM3.

The +R appear to be CMC MAG M01. Just burning one now.

I guess about what I was expecting from Verbatim these days :frowning: This is the top disc from the pack.
