I bought a Verbatim drive at Best Buy also. You need to look at the model # and serial # on the drive itself. Mine happens to be a model 5224W, which after much painstaking tracking through clues in the firmware... Verbatium->Cenedyne->Acer->BenQ
The firmware upgrade at BenQ worked, but it still says "ATAPI 52X24" for the drive, and the thing craps out when burning at 40X (can't finalize) in Nero. Now I'm stuck at 16X!!! Oh well, for $20, it ain't that bad....
The actual email I received back:
This is our product.

Request Type: ,The drive I have is a model 5224W, but the box says Verbatium. The firmware form there sight refers to Acer, whose firmware downloads take me to here, BenQ! Does BenQ make my 5224W? Its serial # is 99********WF00. It was made in March 2003. I'd just like to know so I can CORRECTLY upgrade the firmware...
