Verb won't load/play!

Just opened a new spindle of Verbs and they won’t load/play on my old dvd player (toshiba 1609), but will on my newer sony player and puter (lite-on 166). I burnt the exact same image onto a crapola staples DVD+R and it load/plays fine on the old player. These are CMC verbs, papa18kc0504139 6 taiwan, been having a lot better luck w/these over the prodiscs (consistancy-wise)…

and they scan fine - OS off SB on/on WOPC on @12X

My old player just says ‘loading’ for quite a while then ‘check disc’ - but if I keep hitting play on the remote while it’s ‘loading’ it’ll play it, weird… And it’s not the player, I tried a dozen older burnt verbs and they load/play fine.

Hmm, I did get the latest ripit4me, no other updated apps, one was movie-only (plucked just the movie from a full-disc rip w/Nero recode) so doubt it’s a disc-structure issue, especially since it works on the staples crap dvd+r…

I’ve never tried to return media, what’s the procedure? Do they require the 4 I’ve burnt already testing with whats left of the spindle (Best Buy)?

Actually my toshi isn’t supposed to read +R’s but could up till now by doing booktyping (cause it thinks it’s a dvd-rom etc), so doubt it’ll see it without it… Like I said whats strange is if I hit play on the remote a few times as it’s loading it’ll play it.

So I guess the real question here is did verb change something in the header (or whatever is on blanks that players read).

There’s no “header” per-se because you’re using DVD+R … the lead-in is determined by your burner and only your burner and most readers will only see the lead-in followed by the table of contents. The data the manufacturer puts on there is in the groove wobble - and after burning it’s no longer significant and most drives [readers] don’t bother looking for it or decoding it.

Did you change drives or upgrade your firmware lately? Or did you change DVD Authoring software?

Nope, same nero, same imgburn, never touched the firmware (too chicken), this doesn’t make any sense to me as exact same image works on crap staples disc. only thing different is new verb spindle (and don’t have any other verbs to try out at the moment).

Are all these disks you are trying to play 16X, or is some of them 8X or different?

All 16X… Just had a AHA moment writing my last message, remembered that I dropped 1 and scratched it so didn’t bother even burning it from my last batch of verbs (papa24KC18230215 5), tossed it onto my coaster pile - I just retrieved it and burnt the same image right now to it and my toshi recognized it (seriously doubt it’s a keeper burn though heh) - so to me that settles it, there’s something wrong with this spindle…

Could be a Prodisc MCC versus CMC Mag MCC issue. Lots of people have better luck with CMC Mag made MCC Verbatim. The easiest way to check would be to compare the serials on the hub (the disc from the old spindle and a disc from the new one). If one has a + or - beaking up the serial and one doesn’t then they are definitely made by different manufacturers. Prodisc made MCC are broken up by a + or - in their serials.

I’m not sure what your trying to say Jesterrace, I did say I’m preferring the CMC verbs and did include the serials in my posts, they’re both CMCs. My last 2 spindles have been CMC so I’m sure by now the SB data is buttoned down w/CMC info.

Another sale at Best Buy picked up a spindle (they only had 2 +R 50 spindles both CMC, only other verbs were 25 packs and lightscribe, either they sold alot already or that store is crap) papa18kc022632 1, burnt the same image again and it’s worse, wouldn’t do anything hitting play while disc is loading in my toshi - and it scans good. Again it’ll play in my newer sony dvd player - out of frustration I randomly selected 6 or so older burns again and they all come up fine on the toshi.

all i can say now is wtf…

Reflectivity problem maybe? Or maybe a new rev., try comparing the output with dvd identifier of the new and old batches. Just throwing out ideas. :slight_smile:

they seem to be identical, visually the burnt undersides look identical also (yeah like i could tell that way anyways hah), there’s another number in the underside near the center that can be seen via reflection:

ZD5156-DVR-T47D - last spindle works fine
ZD3121-DVR-T47D - keep hitting play it’ll work in toshi fine in sony

I’d still consider myself newbish, got all the basics down, editing dvd’s in pgcedit is still way beyond me, this is making me feel like a retard though…

Good thought! Never thought about the physical parameters of the disc, but some people mention about MCC’s being variable - maybe it’s a combination of focus and tracking as well as reflectivity that’s making burns worse and partly causing readability issues - then that can be put down to the disc itself. Hmm, some thought like this does make me wonder about where Verb’s QC is going … and whether the new MCC004 and variable batches etc are trustable anymore…

Wouldn’t some of the physical aspects of the disc be seen in how well the burn was? The scan pic 1st post of this thread looks pretty darn good to me - or something too subtle (like reflectivity) for that test to pick up on?

I agree that the scan looks excellent, but a scan doesn’t always tell the whole story…

Maybe you should try cleaning learned media in Qsuite.

Another thing you could run is the TE/FE (qscan) test in Qsuite, one from each batch.

Will give it another go tomorrow, gotta crash…

Did some qscans:

top: wont play on toshi
middle: keep hitting play
bottom: old fine

I scanned a bunch more from the no-play spindle, they all had that focus mound, 2 had climbing tracking at the end & not recommended for 16X burns (I only do 12X anyways). I scanned a few old/good and they vary quite a bit but all passed and stayed down from the limit lines…

A little more background: I like ripit4me, vobblank the trailers/crap and let it restructure the disc (remove unreferenced etc) instead of fixvts, nero recode to fit 4.7gb, and burn w/imgtoolburn 1.2.1 (to skip making an iso and to get that 32k gap ). I get very consistant burn times , 6:05, and very consistant scores w/cdspeed scanning, and has been working very very well for me. I only use Verb MCC004 and always burn at 12X. I got the staples 8x crap because it only cost $2.68 and for something to goof around with. I’ve never done a burn w/nero.

Last night I dloaded and burnt w/imgburn 2.1.0.0 to try something different, had it ‘build’ 'n burn, had the same problem as the older 1.3? version, the drive buffer fluctuates ALOT (other buffer hardly moves, once went to 99 then back to 100) and write speed kept dropping, took 6:45 to burn, and got 2 pif clumps when I scanned it.

I don’t think any of those scans help in solving the puzzle, this is weird. How’s the TRTs, any slow downs? Do you have any other drives to test with?

I’m running out of ideas here… somebody else chime in. :slight_smile:

um, what’s TRT? (I’m still kinda newbish, only been burning for 4+ months,). there did seem to be a pause or 2 in qscan doing the no-play discs… I only have the benq and a lite-on 166s (great for ripping but really bad w/cdspeed scanning).
