I wrote an email to BTC three days ago, asking about their next firmware upgrade and whether it would allow a greater selection of 8x DVDs and also if they would it would allow 8x writing to some of the 4x DVDs like some other 8x manufacturers. I got the auto-reply, but no followup yet. But, today, I noticed they posted a new version of firmware, 55, which I just now installed. Anybody else upgrade to this to see if any the above has been implemented. I haven't tried burning to one of my 4x Memorex DVDs yet, but will do so later this afternoon to see. Crossing my fingers....

# Ver 55 firmware

**rwarrin**#2

I upgraded to 055 the other day and have tried RICOHJPN-R01-002 which are DVD+R 4x and they still show up as 4x so I will let you know if I come across something that will burn at 8x.

Same here <sigh>. So far I haven’t heard of ANYONE successfully burning at 8x with this drive, at least not with a readable product afterwards. Has anyone???

If it’s those you are wondering about they’re DVD-RW discs…

**SKORPIO57**#8

Enoc, how did you view the mid codes? Tried a bin/hex editor, but no go.

Would like a working “hack” to burn RICOHJPNR01 4X DVD+R at 8X. Just like the that works on LiteOn 851S.

**Enoc**#9

uh… too late today for a full explanation (2:35AM here x_x ) so a quick one, and if you need more, tomorrow will be.

Search in the bin for 52 00 49 00 43 in hex mode (R I C)

You’ll find the mids with spaces bretween letters, and then, a 03, 06, 07 or 1F

You must change the 07 of RICOHJPNR01 (x1 x2 x4) to 1F (x1 x2 x4 x8)

But if what OC-Freak sais is true… then it would be another restraint to the speed, cause CMC.MAG.F01 has a 1F.

**SKORPIO57**#10

See see different codes for x1.x2.x4.x8 for different media. Is there a significance for the 1st and 3rd code? 2nd code seems to be consistent. Sorry for the format, columns…

CMC.MAG.F01… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 01

YUDEN000T01… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 01

DAXON…AZ1… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 03

YUDEN000T02… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 00 1F 03

MCC…003… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 00 1F 03

PRODISC.R03… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 00 1F 01

RITEK…R03… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 03

CMC.MAG.E01… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 01

Philips.081… x1.x2.x4.x8* … 00 1F 01

MAXELL…002… x1.x2.x4.x8…(new) 00 1F 01

Here’s a MS Excel chart I made… (right click, save as)

**OC-Freak**#11

If you look closely at the mid code liast youy’ll se that CMC.MAG.F01 is found two places in the mediacode list, one with 8x and one with 4x writespeed.

And they do only write at 4x.

TY 4x DVD+R writes at 8x but ends up unreadable.

MCC 003 8X DVD+R also writes at 8x but ends up unreadable.

So right now I’ll not recommend hacking the firmware to allow 8x writing on more discs as 8x seems to create unreadable discs with current firmwares…

**jsl**#12

There are two different product revisions (00 and 01) of CMC MAG.F01 media. The 01 version had 8x enabled in firmware 053, the 00 version only 4x (just like for TY 4x +R). If BTC hasn’t changed this the same should be true for the 055 version.

SKORPIO57: I think this is how the media codes in the BTC firmware works, example:

01 CMC MAG.F01 01 1F

The 01 in front indicates that it’s 4x certified media (00 that it’s 2.4x and 03 that it’s 8x).

The 01 after the media code is the product revision.

The 1F is the burn speed, 8x here.

BTW seems to be a bug for MPOMEDIA001 and PRODISC.R01: BTC has them listed as 4x media and allows 4x burn speed but these are only 2.4x media.

**schapeke**#13

i can find the MID codes (using 010 editor) but there is nothing bhind/between the MID codes (no 03, 06, 07 or 1F )

can anyone creaye a bin file with the speed for Ricoh JPNR01 set to 8x? i "ll be happy to test it.

**SKORPIO57**#14

Here’s what I noticed on the mids. So there are probably 2 versions of these DVD+R media.

CMC.MAG.F01… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 01

CMC.MAG.F01… x1.x2.x4 … 00 07 01

OPTODISCOP1… x1.x2 … 01 03 00

OPTODISCOP1… x1.x2 … 00 03 00

PRODISC.R01… x1.x2 … 01 03 01

PRODISC.R01… x1.x2.x4 … 00 07 00

YUDEN000T01… x1.x2.x4 … 00 07 00

YUDEN000T01… x1.x2.x4.x8 … 01 1F 01

The probable reason why the CMC.MAG.F01 cannot be read after burning at 8X is maybe 4X certified media was used, not 8X.

**schapeke**#15

can you tell me how you get to see the mid codes and with what editor. i can only see the MID codes, but not the 01 1F 03 stuff etc. i want to change the speed of the Ricoh JPNR01 to 8x. flash my writer and burn at 8x. (hopefully). then i can share my experiences here.

**rwarrin**#17

Someone made a change on 054 and I tried it, the disc now said it could burn at 8x but when I tried to burn it spun a bit and errored out. So I went back to the original 0054. But maybe it will work on 055, let us know.

Thanks

**rwarrin**#19

I have the 054.bin to use with mtkflash. I have in the past had to unplug all cdroms except the one I was going to flash to get it to work. Its been at the point that the drive was not even showing in the device manager. This is why I had to unplug all the other drives to be sure that whe I ran mtkflash that it did not screw up another drive. Let me know if you need the bin or anything.

**schapeke**#20

the drive is as dead as it can be. tried several things to revive it, but no luck. i really hope i can exchange it, else … 99 euro wasted.
