Using re-writalbe optical media for storage

Hi, I am interested in knowing some ways and suggestions for working with re-writable optical media as location to store data to. I have always noticed that Windows when you insert a disc will give you two options. One is like a “Like a USB flash drive”. I assume that this can be good if you want to use the disc for file storage or backup. I am assuming that it is a good backup place because it can’t fail like a hard drive or thumb drive and it can be updated as needed (maybe by a backup program, that already know how to work with). I usually find out a wealth of info on this forum so I thought I might discuss these ideas here to see if I could get info or suggestions of way to do this. So I to make my question clear: is this the best way to make an optical re-writable disc a place to write and overwrite files? Thanks
