USB to SATA bridges and >2Tb HDDs cause problems!



Users of 3Tb or greater hard drives - beware! My experimentation suggests that it is not possible to interchange hard drives between internal SATA controllers and USB to SATA bridge boards due to sector LBA translation being performed by the bridge chip.

I didn’t remember hearing it mentioned so I thought I’d put it up for everyone to read. It might be a good warning to remember.

Don’t expect to be able to perform a quick access to a bare 3Tb hard drive by plugging it into a USB bridge or recover an ailing 3Tb external drive by liberating it from its case and plugging it into an internal port without some major effort in trying to interpret the drive as having a different sector size than that detected.
