We could do with weeding out a few standards and USB would work equally great as the 3.5mm jack, still it will take a while.

I don’t know how comfortable it would be to run a USB cable up to your ears. USB cables are thick and stiff compared to 3.5mm jack cables.

USB-IF claims that when the USB-Type C connector replaces the 3.5mm audio jack, manufacturers can easier design waterproof or water-resistant devices. It should also reduce costs and space by using fewer connectors.
Not to mention it also allows manufacturers to imitate Apple. It wasn’t a good idea when Apple did it with the iPhone, it wasn’t a good idea when Nintendo did it with the GameBox SP (man, that seems like sooooooo long ago), it won’t be any better when everyone else does it too.
