Upgrading my 1633s Firmware - Need Help!

I am currently using a Lite-On 1633s with BSOS firmware and I want to upgrade to the newest firmware. If I understand correctly I can do the following to properly make the upgrade:

  1. Download and install the 1653s CSOT - Stock" firmware

or do I need to use one of these instead:

• CS0T - patched - crossflashing - fast burn FBD/FBDX (for 1633S, 1653S)

• CS0T - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S)

All three can be found HERE:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1653S

  1. Follow “Method #2” as shown here:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/oc.html to install and flash my burner

Is this all I need to do? Is it relatively easy? I do not want to fry my burner as it works fine but is limited by what newer media it can burn. I just bought 100 Taiyo Yuden TYG03 discs (wanted the TYG01) and it will not burn these DVD-R’s (yes they are real TY’s)

I am not concerned with getting the fastest burns but the best quality by usually burning at 4x or 8x which is fine for 99% of my needs.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

It’s very easy. Just download the patched CS0T, unpack and run the .exe file. I use it for several months now and I think it’s one of the best firmwares for these drives.

Ok - I flashed my 1633s BSOH with Codeguys crosspatch [CS0T - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S)]. It was easy as pie and my burner now burns my DVD-R - TYG03 Discs!

All I had to do was: Download, Extract, Run the App, Re-boot

Just as I wrote. And as a bonus you have C0deKing’s nice red led while burning! You might improve the quality of the burns if you reset the learnt media with the EEPROM utility. And make a backup of your EEPROM first, read the sticky thread.
Have a nice day.

If you download the patched ones, then all the most popular “tweaks” are taken care of, you should just download the patched one, run it and you should be set to go. If you download the stock firmware, then you would need to open it and modify it within Omnipatcher to achieve the same results, I guess its available, because some people like to be creative and try performing individualized tweaking for their specific needs.

Downloaded and installed this one: CS0T - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S)

Which can be found HERE:

It was super simple and everything seems to be running and burning fine.

Hi guys! I installed this drive 1633s to my system a year ago. Have never went for an upgrade as it’s always done his job perfecto. Now, this patch sounds great so i was wondering if anyone know if it’s safe to patch it from my current firmware (Nero infotool says BRS6)?
Btw, thanks for one of the greatest forum the net has to offer!

@Mixiplay
just do what msiler said. folow the link, download the mentioned file, unpack the flasher and flash the new firmware. it’s very easy and you can’t do anything wrong.

your current firmware is oem, if you want to flash back (i wouldn’t if there no problem), you can backup your current firmware with this tool: http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm#LtnFW
do the backup before flashing with CS0T.

Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16(1633oem) can it be flashed directly to a 1653S?

yes, just do what msiler suggested.

thanks chokO,

a rostaman at heart?

I updated to CS0T from CS0R some time ago. The only problems I have are (and it may be the CPU for the 2nd one)

  1. I can never get a decent burn with CMC Mag -r disks using the CS0 series of firmware. BS0S gave me excellent burns with this media. I also just bought a few spindles of the Staples CMC Mag AE1 +R 16x disks and the burns are less than satisfactory.
Are they any good rewrite strategies for CMC disks using CS0T firmware? I’ve been trying to find rewrite threads in the forums as I’ve seen them before, but haven’t had much luck today.

  2. I also can’t seem to get my 1633s flashed to 1653s to burn any faster than 8x.
If I use a 16x disk and set Nero for 16x, the fastest I’ll see the burner write is 6x!
If I set it to 8x, it does write at 8x though.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve found that the CS0T firmware LOVES the Verbatim MCC004 series - even more than TY +r’s.

Great info. Sure helped in my situation. Couldn’t burn 16X -R’s so I upgraded to the below mentioned firmware. Now everthing is good. Thanks,

the 1653s only supports 12x for -r media.

I only burn at 4X or 6X regardless of media rating. Before the upgrade my drive wouldn’t even acknowledge the blank 16X media, so I had 200 useless disc. Now at least the drive will accept them and I can use the 16X disc at my preferred speed.

I went to the web site to download the firmware, but when I tried to open it, it was a file windows xp could not read.

First make sure the rar file you downloaded is more than 1 kb. Sometimes firewall or security settings won’t allow you to download the entire archive.

If it’s the full file, you need a program to extract the rar file.

7-zip is a very good program and it’s free.
