Updating firmware

I have done some search on updating my firmware but I cannot find out… Is updating your firmware always a good thing or could it be a bad thing sometimes?

Unless you mess up it’s 99% of the times a good thing.

Updating the firmware of newly issued drives is sometimes necessary - usually due to the fact that the firmware developers were unable to keep up with marketing on the drives introduction (see NEC ND-3520A) and you have a lot of firmware revisions coming out weekly - it would be very wise to update to the latest “official” version-

If your drive is relatively new - then you should only put the latest “official” firmware on it - just in case the drive does not prove out and you have to RMA it back to the vendor-
