Unable To Write: Error 116

Hi, I’m new to the forum. Have recently got Dvd Fab Gold ver 3.1.5.0 and have had difficulty on a few dvd’s so far…Aeon Flux, Letters From Iwo Jima, and The Messengers. It keeps saying Task 2 failed - error 116. I am using Memorex DL Dvd +R 2.4x. Usually it gets 49% complete and then fails. They all seem to fail in about the same 49% to 50%. I have Booktype set to Dvd-Rom. Here is one of the logs (I’d appreciate any help from you knowledgeable folks that are used to debugging these things).:

Hi Bill and welcome to the planet. Thanks for posting the burn log, it really helps. In your case your burner is in PIO mode and is having trouble communicating with the system. It recognized your blank disc as a DL at one point, but then later called it a +R SL and failed when it could not jam all the required bits onto what the burning engine thought was a SL disc. Try the “Reset DMA” button in Common Settings (which you access with the little icon in the upper right that looks like a gear). Getting the transfer mode fixed will often clear up lots of burning problems. Post again if it doesn’t. Other users have had problems with those Memorex DLs, switching to Verbatims has eliminated the problems in many cases.

P.S. Here is a link to a post by my good friend Maineman–look at the links at the bottom for more information and solutions on DMA problems: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1836523&postcount=5

No luck so far. I have created perhaps 15 DL coasters - ouch! About 2 so far after resetting DMA. Last two times I tried using the image on the directory on the hard drive, but this time I’m putting the original dvd in again and copying, however I assume it will fail.

I do see that some of you mention Verbatim +R DL’s. Maybe I need to try those. Who carries Verbatim?

Anyway, other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks! Bill

Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and many other places.

Post us another burn log now that DMA is reset.

Just had another failure after installing the latest firmware for my Sony DRU-710A dvd burner - no difference there either.

As requested, here is the latest burn log:

Bought some Verbatim DL +R 8x disks $4 each - ouch! Hopefully these will really make a difference.

If this doesn’t work, looks like I’ll be contacting support as none of you have any more ideas.

I would suggest the VSO Software website. The link will take you to the support page. When you click Next it will download a small program (vsorep.exe) that will gather system information (including burn logs) for submission to the support staff. They generally respond with 24 hours. The older 2.4-8X Verbatims are generally cheaper and actually work better with some drive firmware. They have a purple label (suspect yours were orange label). Four bucks each is high even for the new ones. Ouch indeed.:iagree:

 Success!! Looks like the Verbatim disks did the trick! All that and only because the quality of the disks wasn’t good enough. That seems pretty odd. I have burned a few titles in the past using Memorex, but not sure how consistent that would be.

Sounds like most of you agree Verbatim is the best with Ty being a second or equal. Are there any other brands that work reasonable such as TDK or something?

What about some -R disks? Would it be the same brands or are there alternatives? Is it usually better to burn using +R or -R? Thanks!

VSO Software? Are they related to DvdFab? Yeah the $4 was high. That was the price at Best Buy - $20 for 5 disks. They also have 20 disks for $50 - so better there but I decided to just get a few for the test. I need to look for sales on these things and find other sources. That 8x burn speed for dual layer is nice, but I need to look up what my burner supports. It may only max at 2.4x anyway. Thanks for the tips.

I had loads of coasters until I switched to Verbatim but none afterwards…I use only +R DL’s and -R’s SL. I’ve not tried TY’s yet. They have a value TY and a regular TY, and I don’t know which to get. Also I think you can only get TY’s online and I don’t think they make a DL.

They provide the VSO burning engine which is incorporated in DVDFab. DLs are never on sale when you need them.:frowning: Good luck with this.

I just bought a 15 disc spindle of Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x for 40.00 at Best Buy. They are a bit expensive, but they are the cream of the crop.

You should give Newegg.com a try. They have some good deals sometimes. I get most of my stuff from there. The egg rocks ! ~ Mike

Yup, the egg rocks alrighty… :iagree:

Also a good idea to keep on eye on:
CD Freaks Bargain Basement
for media as well as all kinds of other good stuff.

Best deal on verb +R DLs I ever got was at OfficeMax (online) ~ last Christmas.
10 pks were going for $10.99 or $11.99…no sales tax and free shipping.
I think I bought 120 or so…
The in-store sales aren’t too shabby either…

I don’t think those deals were on the 8x versions, and new egg / zipzoomfly don’t carry them. The only place I can find them are Best Buy and Office Max.

Check out supermediastore.com if you want not great but OK and free shipping and no tax on most things.
