Unable to recover TOC (Matshita UJ-842 w/ Verbatim DVD-R 8x)

#1

My burner is a Matsushita DVD-RAM UJ-842 drive inserted into a dock attached to my pc. [http://www5.pc.ibm.com/dk/products.nsf/$wwwPartnumLookup/_40Y8623?OpenDocument]

I’m trying to burn Verbatim DataLifePlus 8x DVD-Rs.

The first error code is 052400, which corresponds to “Invalid field in CDB”. The next error code is 035700 which corresponds to “Unable to recover Table of Contents”.

No other programs are running, all connections are fine, DMA is on, and the discs are new.

I’ve burned only DVD+R/RWs so far, but the drive should be able to use DVD-R/RW discs as well. I’m using Nero Burning ROM version 7.5.1.1 with Windows XP Pro SP2. Just before trying these new discs, I burned to a different medium successfully, and the first of these Verbatim discs burned successfully and produced an error free scan with VSO Inspector 1.2.7.76. After that first disc, however, all further discs have the same errors listed above. The log file is included below.

Does anyone know of an explanation for why I can’t burn these discs? It seems like they are incompatible with the drive, but every listing I’ve seen indicates otherwise, and I was able to successfully burn one the first time I tried. Help or information is greatly appreciated!

EDIT 1
I also tried using CDBurnerXP Pro, and received the second error (Unable to recover TOC).

#2

Multisession type: : Start multisession

Never ever do that on DVDs.

Also clean the drive.

#3

Well, even if I was to burn a multisession DVD, it should still burn correctly, no?
I cleaned the drive with a Q-tip, but I still get the same error. I doubt that the drive is unclean, though, because I can burn other media just fine.

#4

No.

Then just use better and recommended media.

#5

Ah, well from what I’ve read on the forums most people seem to think that MCC 02RG20 discs are good. I’ll try to return them, I guess.

#6

I have a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-840S drive in my laptop. I’m not sure what the difference is between the 840 and the 842, but I’m assuming they are fairly similar.

My UJ-840S wasn’t too thrilled when I burned Verbatim MCC 02RG20 at 8x (dropped to 6x and ugly quality scan with unreadable sectors on one of my other drives), and the 2x burn wasn’t anything to write home about either.

It also doesn’t like Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R media (TYG02) very much.

In fact my drive seems to prefer DVD+R media over DVD-R media, so you might want to consider using some DVD+R instead. Unfortunately the Matshita drives don’t support DVD-ROM booktype bitsetting on DVD+R Single Layer media, so you don’t get the best possible compatibility with DVD Video players.
