Unable to burn CD

My burner used to work absolutely fantastic, full speed and it would finish burning a full CD in no longer than 4 minutes. Now it often takes 10 minutes or longer, or just doesn’t burn period. I’ve tried several different kinds of discs, so that’s not the problem. After I had this problem for a while with 6.3.something I decided an upgrade might be the solution, so I upgraded to 6.6.0.15a. That didn’t do the trick either.

Here’s a burn log from this morning, hopefully somebody can point out a few things that might help.

1st i’d enable DMA, i see dma is off for the cd-rw.
2nd what for media you’ve used?

#3

Well to answer the 2nd part first I’ve used all sorts of media - Samsung, Kodak, Memorex, etc. and I’m positive that’s not the problem as they’ve burned successfully when I’ve tried them with other burners.

When I tried to enable DMA it only gave me the options ‘DMA if available’ and ‘PIO only’. When I tried to uninstall the CD-RW drive (so I could enable DMA) it wouldn’t let me, saying it’s possible I need it to boot up Windows (which I don’t).

#4

Yes, choose “DMA if available” and then reboot your system, then you should have DMA
enabled!

#5

Well I did that and DMA is still not activated. The ‘DMA if available’ option was already selected when I checked it, so I’d assume DMA was turned off by Windows after a few previous errors. The only way to turn it back on after Windows turns it off is to re-install the CD drive, but since Windows won’t let me uninstall it in the first place, I’m really stuck on what to do now.

#6

Try physically disconnecting the drive and rebooting. You may be able to uninstall it then.

#7

Are you just trying to burn a music CD? Because, just glancing through your log, I see you are not finalizing the disc & are doing a multi-session. Also TOA(Track-at-once), try DOA(Disc-at-once). I’m just guessing here. Hope it helps.

#8

Well I didn’t uninstall the drive but I switched the cables for the CD-RW and the DVD-ROM drives, and now DMA is enabled for the CD-RW drive. Just burned a CD and it turned out great, maybe not quite as quick as before, but still a very dramatic improvement. Thank you everybody for your help.

#9

The log claims: Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR).

Have you tried a different sort of media? I’ve had this once with very poor discs. Mind that even if the say they’re Ritek, they don’t have to be some.
