Unable to burn any kind of CD

CD Burner: ASUS CRW5224A
Motherboard: MSI nForce2 Delta-L
Proc: AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Ram: 2x256MB DDR Dual-channel GEIL
Recently, I am unable to burn CDs no matter what brand: either they won’t burn or I get lots of errors. I find it vague that it’s my cd burner is broken since it’s barely 2 years old (my friend has his for 5 years already and it’s still working) and I didn’t do anything extraordinary to it. I already tried enabling/disabling the “enable cd recording” property of the drive but it still doesn’t work (when it’s enabled, the simulation fails, when it’s disabled, it “seems” to burn nicely but in the verification, a lot of errors appear) and I also tried enabling/disabling the IMAPI COM service.I already tried cleaning the lens (using cd lens cleaners) and it still doesn’t work. I also tried taking out some of my USB peripherals to check if it’s the PSU overload (mine’s 300W) and removed unimportant IDE connections. I even checked if DMA is enabled and it showed that it’s using UDMA3 and downgraded it to multi-word DMA2 just to check if it’s a cable problem… not to mention that I also reinstalled my ATA controller. However, none of them seems to work…
Here’s a log of one of my failed burns in Nero 6: (the strange thing is… it states that DMA is… off?)

P.S. I also updated my firmware to 1.70 and the same problem still exists

#2

At the moment there are only two things I can think of:

1 - Are you using nVidia IDE drivers? If so, try switching to Microsoft’s standard IDE drivers.

2 - The drive is broken. A 2-year lifespan is short, but not uncommon. Try the drive in a different computer to see if it is the drive itself that is broken, or if the problem lies somewhere else.

#3

Either it’s some complication with the nVidia IDE drivers or the drive is just gone. Sure, I still have a Plextor 16x CD burner that’s built like a truck and hasn’t died yet, but I also had a newer Yamaha quit on me after a bit more than a year. A replacement shouldn’t cost you too much.

#4

few things

a) im almost sure your burner is connected along with one of your hard drives ill know for sure if youll give a nero infotool log, thats very bad if true connect the burner standalone with no other device on the ide cable , put the burner in secondary ide port as master and the hard drives at the first ide port put the one that have windows on it as master and the other as slave

b) dma is off, uninstall nvidia unified driver and reinstall it but without nvidia ide driver

c) your burners firmware isnt latest get 1.70
http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/cdrw/5224A/CRW_5224A_170.zip
make sure no media is in the drive while updating

d) from what i can see under “ATIP Data” your burner likely dont like that media firmware updating might fix it but might not also maybe youll need to use another media brand i recommend verbatim datalife pastel/taiyo yuden you can get taiyo yuden medias from www.rima.com

e) this is probably unrelated but 81mb free out of 512mb isnt much you should do some clean up run msconfig and take off from startup any program you dont really need also check ctrl+alt+del see whats taking so much ram and maybe get another software/s that will replace it and use less ram, also latest nero is 6.6.0.15a you might wanna get it

#5

Hmm… thanks for the tips… uninstalled the nVidia drivers and the same problem still exists… so I guess my CD burner is really b0rk3d (time to waste monet again :\ )

Anyway… thanks again

{Edit} I just found out that I’m still using the 40-wire IDE cable… so I think that could be the problem…

#6

not likely and i guess you mean problem as dma, click the ide channel the burner is on under “ide ata/atapi controllers” in device manager and click uninstall and restart also check dma configuration in bios, did you connect the burner with another optical drive or standalone as i recommended? its not good at all to have it connected with a hard drive

40wire ide cable is good enough at least when connected with another optical drive or standalone nearly all optical drives except few recent dvd burners are ata33 therfore 40wire is good enough

did you get the latest nero?

#7

It was stand-alone from the beginning
here’s the latest log I got (I still haven’t upgraded nero… doing it now)

its a bit hard to figure that from the nero logs

anyway regarding the last log everything but the media used seems fine
from some reason i dont think the info under “atip data” means the burner like it… ,yeah you alredy tried diffrent brands as you stated in your first post however all burners are compatible with only certain media companies/codes so that doesnt have to mean the media aint at fault and in general asus cd burners like medias manufactured by TDK, Taiyo Yuden, CMC, Ritek, Prodisc, Mitsubishi Chemical, i suggest youll get some taiyo yudens from www.rima.com,also run a defrag and always have the antivirus resident protection disabled while burning
