“ The new Ultra-HD Blu-ray discs will only support 3840 x 2160 pixels, which matches the resolution of Ultra-HD displays. The cinema 4K resolution of  4096 x 2160 pixels won’t be supported.”   Why not and why not have the pixel count as 4K cinema as the standard resolution ??  Guess it will be DRMed to hell along with nasty regional coding…

Because 4096x2160 is yet another aspect ratio that doesn’t match any widescreen TV made in the past 10+ years and all the “4k” TVs are actually UHD 3840x2160.

I’m surprised they didn’t include it. Ultra HD displays just need to chop off 128 pixels on each side to match the screen’s native resolution, which is what I assume they will do to render the 3840 x 2160 video resolution for the disc.Â

AFAIK the only consumer displays with that resolution are Sony’s 4k projectors. So basically no one would see what was on the edges if the displays just cropped it.
