Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully

So I am a newbie and have no knowledge in this area so I was hoping you guys might be able to help…

About a month ago my laptop was having a lot of problems so I reformatted… which turned out to cause even more problems… on board sound didn’t work, card readers still don’t work, wifi doesn’t work, etc… I’ve learned to deal with those problems after endless searching for answers turned up nothing. I’ve been trying to burn a few dvds recently and not one of them has worked. There are 3 different things I have been trying to burn. One ISO, and two different .img files. Thus far I’ve tried magiciso, nero, and dvd santa. All of which turn out some sort of error a few minutes in.

For nero, I go to Nero Burning Rom, select DVD-ROM (ISO) on the left and click new. Then I click Recorder, and click burn image, then select the .img file and click burn. Then after a few minutes an error message pops up with “Unspecified Recorder Error”.

here’s the nero log

What blank discs are you using? It is common for bad media to cause errors.

As for your other problems, when you reformatted it sounds like you did not re-install the drivers for your devices.

CMC MA - G. AM3

Known as media picky in most burners.
Buy better media.

It looks like you’re using an external burner. If you are and you didn’t re-install the usb 2.0 drivers, that could be the problem. Also try to burn with http://www.imgburn.com/

No I’m not using an external drive… it’s a slimtype SOSW-852S.

As far as media, I had been using compusa brand dvd-r’s, which I thought could have been the problem so I bought Memorex dvd-r s the other day and still. Any recommendations on media?

Can you try some 8x Verbatim discs, and see where that gets you?

Could be that the burner is picky with 16x media (it’s an 8x burner, yes?).

I have heard of poor results with memorex also.
Best brands recommended on most Forums are Taiyo Uden, Verbatim, Maxell (Ritek) and possibly TDK

nope!

ritek = :Z

the reason why memorex is always looked down upon is because there’s a darn good chance that it’s ritek!

Best brands recommended on most Forums are Taiyo Uden, Verbatim

True. As for Maxwell as long as it is (MIJ).

:iagree:

If you’re lucky, you may end up with CMC manufactured Memorex (which burns OK as long as your burner supports it well - in this particular case, obviously not!), but I wouldn’t like to take that chance - so I steer clear of Memorex.

Edit: And I wouldn’t touch Ritek-made Maxells with a 10-foot pole, so I agree with the good Doc also.

Heck I don’t even think my burner is 8x I think it’s 2x. I’ll try better media and see if that helps.

If I’m not mistaken all of the 2nd generation (indicated by the 2 in the 852) Lite-On drives are 8x rated.

Interesting, I own an Averatec 3360 which claims it can burn at 8x like you said, but it always only has the option to burn at 2x… and nero infotool claims 2x is the max…

I think your burning issue speed is the media maybe?

I would second that…the LiteOn at least is definitely an 8x burner, IIRC.

And Nero will often do that if the drive doesn’t have the media code in its firmware…

Odd. A google search on the Averatec 3360 shows it as a laptop and not a DVD burner. Apparently Averatec only produces laptops per their site as well. Nero shows your DVD burner as a Lite-On SOSW 852S. Maybe you should check Liteonit.com for a firmware update. Latest update became available in March of this year and it claims it matches more media so maybe the discs you currently have are included which would give proper speed support up to your drives capabilties.

Think http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=123122&cm_keycode=85 will work in my drive (SOSW-852s)?

I think they’re 4x (correct me if I’m wrong), so yes, they should work fine.

I still think you should try 8x Verbatims, though

Haha alright, you win, I’ll go to fry’s and get those.

Couldn’t find verbatim anywhere so I went with the TDKs and, although not 8x, it let me burn at 4x which is still better than 2x and the dvd actually worked, so I’m not going to push my luck and be happy with these results. Thanks guys
